Action-packed multiplayer RPG transitions to a free game on Steam

While Steam sees releases of new free games every now and then, not all of them remain freebies forever. However, from July 23, 2025, it has become a free game on Steam, and as the official announcement from developers states, this decision came after Castle of Blackwater couldn't get the right amount of traction in terms of player count. Given that it's a multiplayer game, not having enough players means the matchmaking won't be "as healthy as it needed to be."

As for the players who have bought Castle of Blackwater before it transitioned to a free game on Steam, they will get "special rewards" that new players won't have access to. The developers highlight that the previous players will get the following:

• A full collection of 21 starter cosmetics
• An exclusive Mythical Cosmetic that's said to be a one-of-a-kind reward

Players find themselves trapped in the castle and need to complete tasks, form alliances, and survive against opposition to win.

There are three different phases: Day, Night, and Voting. During the day, players need to complete their tasks while investigating suspicious behavior. At night, they can choose to continue their tasks while facing challenges or retreat to safe zones. The voting phase mostly involves players debating and voting to eliminate those who could be a part of the opposing faction.
