Resident Evil 4 takes place six years after the Raccoon City outbreak. Leon S. Kennedy, now a special agent for the US government, is sent to a remote European village to rescue the president’s daughter. There, he confronts the fanatical cult known as "Los Iluminados," whose members are infected with a mysterious parasite. While longtime fans will recognize the story, the remake presents it with a darker tone, adds greater depth to several characters, and introduces smart changes that even surprise series veterans.
In terms of gameplay, Resident Evil 4 stays true to its third-person shooter roots while being thoroughly modernized. A free-moving camera, the ability to shoot while moving, and overall more fluid controls create a far more dynamic experience. The most notable addition is the new parry system, which allows players to block melee attacks with a knife – adding a tactical, almost Souls-like layer to combat. Stealth mechanics, a crafting system for ammo and healing items, as well as expanded upgrade and merchant systems round out the improvements.
Resident Evil 4 was met with widespread acclaim from both critics and players. German gaming magazine GamePro awarded it a score of 93, praising the updated gameplay, varied structure, and striking audiovisual design. The story, which stays close to the original while introducing fresh twists, also drew positive attention. Criticism was largely limited to a few dated design choices such as the restricted jumping mechanics and occasionally frustrating companion sections involving Ashley. 4Players, another German gaming outlet, even went so far as to call the remake “the best Resident Evil ever.”
With a Metascore of 93 and a User Score of 8.9, Resident Evil 4 has received strong praise on Metacritic. The response on Steam is even more impressive: 97% of more than 200,000 user reviews are positive. This places the remake among the highest-rated games on the platform, even ahead of acclaimed titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Half-Life 2.
