The sharp increase in RAM prices has made it difficult for many to build a decently powerful gaming PC without spending a lot of money. For instance, most 32 GB DDR5-5600 kits without any fancy RGB are currently retailing for more than $300 on Amazon. SSD prices are also rising.
In other words, building a desktop gaming PC for 1440p or 4K gaming is now much more expensive, and the situation is expected to get even worse moving forward. Thankfully, gamers still have the option of gaming laptops, which are still reasonably priced compared to similarly powerful desktop PCs. You can even find some excellent machines with flagship internals at remarkable discounts.
Case in point, Woot is offering last year’s MSI Titan 18 HX A14VIG gaming laptop with an RTX 4090 laptop GPU and a Core i9-14900HX for just $2,269.99. This price is 43% lower than the laptop’s full list price of $4,000. The notebook is in factory-refurbished condition, which helps explain the large discount, and comes with six months of MSI warranty.
In addition to the beastly GPU and CPU, the MSI Titan 18 HX also packs 64 GB of DDR5 memory and 4 TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage. There are a total of four SO-DIMM slots for RAM and three m.2 slots for storage. So, you’ll have two free SO-DIMM slots for RAM expansion and one free m.2 slot for a storage upgrade down the line.
Moving to the front, the MSI Titan 18 HX features an 18-inch Mini-LED panel with 4K resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and an advertised 100% DCI-P3 coverage. The laptop also boasts a SteelSeries mechanical keyboard with per-key RGB backlighting, and a large glass trackpad.
Finally, a healthy port selection, Wi-Fi 7 and BT5.4, and a 99.99 Wh battery complete the specs.
If you want to take a deeper dive into the MSI Titan 18 HX, check out our detailed written review, which tackles everything from performance and display quality to thermals/noise situation.
As a short summary, the MSI Titan 18 HX is a beast from almost every angle. The metal chassis is sturdy, the mechanical keyboard is outstanding, and the performance is sufficient for 1400p/4K gaming, especially if you use DLSS. The 18-inch Mini-LED display is one of the best parts about the laptop. It boasts almost complete DCI-P3 coverage, more than 450 nits of SDR brightness, over 1,000 nits of HDR brightness, infinite contrasts, and excellent factory calibration.
The only real drawbacks of the display are the lack of Nvidia G-Sync and considerably reduced brightness on battery. Aside from these, the MSI Titan 18 HX’s panel is an outstanding canvas for both work and play.
Finally, the 175 W RTX 4090 laptop GPU and the Core i9-14900HX are both flagship internals that produce a lot of heat. Fans on the MSI Titan 18 HX can get super loud to manage the thermals. Therefore, a pair of headphones, preferably with noise cancellation, is a necessity if you want to run the Titan 18 HX at maximum performance.
