Box office domination: Last Rites shatters records
Apparently people really love watching cursed nuns and demonic dolls because The Conjuring: Last Rites stormed into theaters with a staggering $194 million worldwide debut. That makes it the highest horror opening in history, knocking It off the throne after eight long years.
In the U.S., the film pulled in a franchise-best $83 million in just three days. Overseas audiences joined the party with over $110 million, proving that when it comes to ghost stories, subtitles are no barrier to nightmares. By the end of its first stretch, Last Rites wasn’t just a hit — it became the most successful entry in the entire franchise.
The TV show nobody saw coming (but everybody will watch)
You’d think Warner Bros. would let the Warrens rest in peace after that kind of send-off. Instead, they’re digging the coffin back up and dragging it over to HBO Max. A Conjuring TV series is officially on the way, and running the haunted house will be Nancy Won.
Won has the kind of résumé that makes her perfect for this gig: Jessica Jones, Supernatural, and Little Fires Everywhere. In other words, she knows how to blend grit, heart, and the kind of ghostly atmosphere that makes you regret turning off the hallway light. She’s also joined by writers Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires, both of whom have solid genre experience. Translation: expect creepy things lurking in corners, but with actual character depth behind the screams.
Plot details? Sealed tighter than Annabelle’s glass case. All we know is the series will expand on the mythology built in the films. Whether that means new cases for Ed and Lorraine or a dive into entirely different horrors, fans are already theorizing—loudly.
Why this matters
The Conjuring franchise has always been Hollywood’s reminder that horror isn’t just profitable, it’s bulletproof. Even after spinoffs ranging from the excellent Annabelle: Creation to the aggressively fine The Nun II, audiences keep showing up. Last Rites proved the appetite hasn’t slowed.
Shifting to TV is more than just a content grab. It gives the franchise room to breathe. A serialized format could dig into investigations the films didn’t have time for. Imagine the Warrens tackling a new haunting every week, or the series turning into a sort of paranormal anthology. Either way, HBO Max clearly sees potential in letting the scares stretch out across eight to ten episodes instead of two hours.
And if all else fails, there’s always the option to bring back Annabelle. That doll never stays locked away for long.
