Tesla wireless charging home garage pad coming to take over from its EV wall charger
Instead of Superchargers or wall chargers, current and future Tesla owners may be able to use wireless charging pads for their electric cars at some point, according to Tesla's Head of Design Franz von Holzhausen.
During a Cybertruck joyride with Jay Leno, he confirmed that Tesla is working on an inductive wireless charging solution that will enable garage owners to equip their homes with wireless charging pads.
Their Teslas could then simply drive over the pad in the garage and start charging, limiting the need for wall chargers but also the times when they find their Tesla with a near empty battery because they forgot to plug in overnight.
Tesla even teased its wireless induction charging pad during its 2023 Investor Day presentation when it showed the upcoming Hollywood Supercharger drive-in. There was a Model S on the same slide, parked in a garage with a wacky looking charger that may have been none other than the inductive wireless charging system that Tesla reportedly dubs "Project Garfield" internally.
Over the summer, Tesla also acquired the wireless charging company Wiferion on the hush-hush, and disposed of its assets while keeping all of its engineers, so where there is smoke, there might be fire, too.
Hopefully not in the literal sense, of course, but according to Tesla's design chief what the Project Garfield wireless charging experience will feel like is that "you just pull up in your garage, drive over the pad, and you’re charging."
