Tesla increases the official Model Y range estimate as it resumes AWD deliveries
Tesla has now gone through the new EPA range test motions and has submitted an updated Model Y range estimate that has allowed it to continue the shipments of its most popular vehicle to those who ordered it.
Just as it happened with the cheapest Model Y RWD version, the Model Y AWD is now officially rated for a longer range on a charge according to the EPA testing standards than Tesla's own mark.
Previously, Tesla's internal Model Y AWD range testing showed 308 miles of range on a charge, while the new EPA standards resulted in an upward revision of one percentage point to 311 miles of range.
Tesla recently paused Model Y deliveries for a few days until it was done with the government's new testing routine mix that is better suited to the highway habits of the American driving public.
It now has official EPA estimates for all the three Model Y versions it sells in the US that are as follows:
- Model Y RWD: 337 miles range
- Model Y AWD: 311 miles range
- Model Y Performance: 277 miles range
Needless to say, the single-motor RWD Model Y version offers the highest range on a charge, but Americans don't actually get the global Model Y with the longest range rating.
This privilege goes to places like Europe, where there is a fourth, Model Y RWD LR variant that is rated as good for 600km, or 372 miles of range on a charge.
Tesla just introduced the version this year, but the range estimate is on the local WLTP cycle that is about 10% more generous than the EPA's new EV range testing standard, so the second-cheapest Model Y option in Europe essentially offers the same real-life range as the most affordable Model Y in the US.
