Steam launch: New Smash Bros.-like 2D fighter game has fast-paced brawls, "Very Positive" reviews, and 29% launch discount

This week, the indie scene just saw the release of A Few Quick Matches, a new 1-4 player platform fighter with old-school design elements and a more modern gameplay style. Available on Steam since August 5, 2025, this game from Studio Bidou introduces players to fast, competitive brawls that rely heavily on nostalgia to capture the essence of classic fighting games.
When players first jump into A Few Quick Matches, they'll be immediately hit with the simplicity of its controls. The combat is accessible enough for newcomers to pick up quickly, but the combo system gives more experienced players plenty to sink their teeth (and hours) into. Successive hits can lead to satisfying air dashes or chains of attacks as well.
The fluidity of the stick-figure animations also deserves some attention. While the style might not be unfamiliar, watching characters move and interact during intense brawls is pretty funny and makes it hard to look away. As you can tell from the screenshots below, there are no heavy graphics or flashy visuals, and we have seen an uptick with such launches recently. It's a formula that just works.
For fans of multiplayer fighting games, A Few Quick Matches has great local play options. The game supports up to four players, making it perfect for casual get-togethers. However, online multiplayer is why most people will pick this game up. It features rollback netcode to make sure that even players facing off remotely can enjoy smooth, lag-free combat. Of course, there are a few key issues with the multiplayer - a fair number of players have encountered problems with quickplay lobbies and matchmaking. However, these are things that can be fixed in time, and the fact that the developers are already working on them bodes well for the game's long-term potential.
Speaking of potential, one area where A Few Quick Matches shows a lot of it is in the content - though, admittedly, it's quite light for now. With only three characters at launch, the roster feels a little too thin. The stages are very basic, and there’s room for improvement here as well. Studio Bidou has already promised to add more characters and features in future updates, including mod support. The game has full controller support as well.
As mentioned earlier, the game should run smoothly on most systems, even with modest hardware requirements. You’ll need just 512 MB of RAM, a DirectX-compatible graphics card with at least 32 MB of VRAM, and around 300 MB of storage. It’s a lightweight game, and it doesn’t really demand much.
Now, let's talk feedback. The game has already received positive reactions from its community, with a "Very Positive" rating on Steam. The simplicity and charm of the game have been well-received. Players have pointed out that, despite the limited content, the potential is there. Some have voiced the need for more characters and a deeper tutorial system, but the response has been favorable, all in all.
At just $4.96 after a 29% launch discount, it'd be fair to say that the game is priced reasonably. For more info, check out the Steam store page for A Few Quick Matches here.
