Train weeks on Steam: Many games revolving around trains are currently discounted
Fans of train games can currently find several deals on Steam, including Transport Fever 2, Subway Builder, Denshattack, and Running Train. The selection covers a range of different railroad gaming experiences.

Steam has launched its so-called Steam Train Fest, a week-long sale featuring substantial discounts on numerous train-themed games. The selection ranges from driving and building games to shooters, along with some decidedly unusual interpretations of rail travel.

One example is Denshattack. "Densha" is the Japanese word for "train" but the game has little to do with conventional train operation. Instead, players must perform stunts with an entire train. Choo-Choo Charles is no less strange. It is a shooter centered on battling a spider locomotive. The list also includes several shooters that appear to qualify simply because they contain the word "rail," suggesting that something went wrong during curation. Of course, plenty of conventional train games are included as well.

A wide selection of train simulators

Players interested in particularly realistic train operations can find Running Train among the discounted titles. Despite being developed by just one person, the game stands out for its unusually realistic Japanese-style approach, similar to Densha de Go. However, its route is fictional.

The JR East Train Simulator also focuses heavily on realistic train operation. Both games require players to stop precisely and adhere to the timetable. The rather mediocre Subway Sim 2 is included as well, though it remains the only option for fans of the Berlin or Hamburg subway systems. Derail Valley may appeal to players who enjoy derailing trains. While the goal is technically to prevent this, the difficulty can be quite high at times. There are also relatively few simulators that allow derailments in this way.

Building games are also included

The selection also features building and management games. Transport Fever 2 may already be several years old, but Urban Games has continued to release updates for it. Anyone unwilling to wait for Transport Fever 3 can now pick it up at a discount.

The recently released Subway Builder is also heavily discounted. However, players coming from Transport Fever should not expect the same complexity in route planning. The options are more limited, and several bugs can be frustrating, though the game itself remains highly complex. Its use of census data allows it to simulate passenger flows based on real-world surveys.

Those looking for something more accessible can opt for Mini Metro instead. However, "accessible" mainly describes the initial learning curve, as each map becomes steadily more difficult the longer it is played. Rail Route is a more specialized title aimed primarily at players who enjoy studying track diagrams. It could also be described as a railway dispatching simulator.

Demos

The ongoing Steam Train Fest also includes several game demos. One of them is Cat Isle, whose demo was released for the event to provide an initial look at the game. The full version is not yet complete and is not available in Early Access.

Steam Train Fest runs through July 27, 2026, and can be accessed through the Steam app as well.
