Lil Gator Game launched on Steam on December 14, 2022. This charming adventure comes from indie developer MegaWobble and was published by Playtonic Friends, a sister label of Playtonic Games. As the title suggests, players step into the role of a playful little alligator – clearly inspired by Link from The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages in both look and spirit.
Lil Gator’s biggest wish is to win the attention of his older sister. To make that happen, he and his friends launch a playful island-wide adventure using cardboard and handmade props – hoping she’ll notice and join the fun. As players explore the island, they help friendly animals with small quests, battle cardboard monsters, gather crafting materials and draw more and more companions into the game.
The German gaming magazine Gamers Palace reviewed Lil Gator Game and praised it as a wonderful way to rediscover the carefree joy of childhood. “I like being able to be a kid again,” wrote author Beatrice Eichhorn. The game is an open 3D platformer that focuses entirely on fun – there are no frustrating health bars or complex mechanics. Instead, it’s all about movement: players climb, swim and glide their way across the island, uncovering its many charming secrets.
Gamers Palace had little to criticize in its review of Lil Gator Game. While the wide variety of activities can sometimes feel overwhelming and the climbing mechanics are described as slightly unintuitive, the overall experience remained highly positive. The swimming animation stood out in particular – “It’s simply the best animation I’ve ever seen in a video game,” wrote the reviewer. The game received a solid score of 82 out of 100 from Gamers Palace. Over on Metacritic, it holds a similar rating with a Metascore of 84 and a User Score of 8.2. Steam users are even more enthusiastic, with over 4,000 reviews and an outstanding 99% positive rating.
