Sony will add VRR support to the PS5, but it refuses to say when

The PS5 is now available worldwide, albeit in limited quantities. Earlier this month, Sony confirmed that it had reserved M.2 SSD expansion support for a 'future update', much to the chagrin of fans. Now, Sony has confirmed that another feature will be arriving via a software update.

This time it is variable refresh rate (VRR), which the Xbox Series S|X has supported since launch day. In short, VRR allows the Series S|X to alter the TV's refresh rate to the in-game framerate. In an updated 'PS5: The Ultimate FAQ' article on the PlayStation.Blog, Sony stated the following:

PS5 hardware supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR.

Crucially, Sony has not outlined when it plans to enable VRR, or M.2 SSD expansion support. Currently, DIRT 5 and Assassin's Creed Valhalla support VRR, but more games are expected to follow suit. The PS5 has a performance advantage over the Series X in the latter though, as shown by Digital Foundry. Hence, it is not all bad news for the PS5, despite the current omission of VRR support.
