With a weight of 2.3kg, the VAIO CA can definitely be carried around if needed. Be warned that the 39mm chassis is fairly bulky, however, so you'll need to clear some space in your bag first.

We didn't get any indications of battery life or price, but availability is expected from the 21st of March. To be honest we're cautiously impressed, though it will all depend on how affordable Sony makes its colourful laptops. But considering the eminently reasonable pricing on its new S Series, we're hopeful these may come in at below £600, which – based on what we've seen so far - would make them great mainstream options.

Sony's C Series laptop isn't one for the faint-hearted. The 14.4-inch screen toting notebook comes in an array of colours, from nuclear-green to sunshine orange and sports a HD video camera and HDMI out. We doned our sunglasses for this first look video.

Beacon buoy. "Envious" looks will be a sure thing with the CA range. The flashy color adorns itself with light effects, the workmanship is stable and the ergonomic rates are exemplary. We will clarify if the 14 incher really is only something for Fashion Week guests and "Glamour" readers.

With its Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and dedicated AMD Radeon graphics chip, the Sony has plenty going for it as a media-editing machine, and its 0.66 benchmark score is very respectable. Sony also supplies the VPC-CA1S1E with a two-year warranty if bought from its online store. All the same, we’d have reservations about rolling it out on a school-wide scale.

Sony's Vaio computers have a reputation as being expensive and, sometimes, gimmicky. With that in mind, consider the Sony Vaio C Series 14, which is a £720 laptop with a bright-coloured semi-translucent plastic body. However, for general office and internet use it performed perfectly well, and if the design and range of colours appeals, it represents reasonable value.

If you're a fan of neon colour choices, transparent overlays and rubber keyboard covers, Sony's 14in VAIO C Series is the only choice. A decent screen, backlit keyboard and two-year warranty as standard certainly don't hurt it either, though it doesn't excel in general performance and its battery life is below-par. If the warranty isn't a primary concern, you can get better-specified, better-built laptops for less, but they won't be as colourful.

The Vaio C Series has a lot going for it on a number of fronts, not the least of which is the excellent build quality and stylish appearance. It's a quiet running and pretty well specified machine with enough pep to run games, albeit without any bells and whistles. There are some smart extra trimmings too, and we particularly appreciated the quick-boot browser mode. Battery life is on the short side, but the weakest point in this Vaio's armour is its display, which is overly reflective and suffers from narrow viewing angles.

The Sony VPCCA1S1E C series laptop is a 14 inch in a strikingly colourful design. Although its graphics card won't give the sort of performance gamers are looking for, coupled with its powerful processor it is efficient for multimedia, Internet and document usage. Make sure you don't stray too far from the socket however as its battery life is pretty poor.

Much as we love laptops, we'd be the first to admit they can look a tad... samey. The 14-inch Sony Vaio C series VPCCA1S1E has a striking, deliberately plasticky design, and comes in a range of colours you'll either love or despise.

At Rs. 55,990 for this model (VPCCA15FG), the VAIO C makes a good buy given the features and performance. Funky looks apart, it packs in some serious fire power under all the translucent, hippie lighting effects. Some of the highlights of this notebook include the auto switchable graphics, auto-backlighting of the keyboard, very comfortable and ergonomic keys coupled with good build quality. It can also handle DX10 games pretty well without compromising too much on quality. Apart from the average battery life and the weight, there’s not much to complain about really. Now, if Sony would drop the price a little, it would be a great buy.

The only real drawbacks we could find with this machine are a tendency for the keyboard to flex during typing and a pretty flimsy DVD drive. We would also have liked one of the four USB ports to have been upgraded to USB 3.0, but you can't have everything sadly. Sony has a great line-up when it comes to laptops. While we expect the business users to go for the ultraportable Z-Series and those on a budget to opt for the E-Series, we think anyone who wants a bit more flair will be happy with the funky C-Series as their next laptop.

This is a fun, funky and functional family PC that's middle of the road in everything but looks. It's a little on the heavy side but still perfectly portable. The performance is perfectly acceptable for mainstream use, just don't try gaming, and the battery life will get you through a movie comfortably. You can't ignore the design statement that screams ‘I love glowing Perspex curves’, but that doesn't obscure the fact that the VAIO C (for colourful, perhaps) gives the average PC user exactly what they need.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
AMD Radeon HD 6470M: Entry to middle class graphics card based on the Seymore XT codename featuring the UVD3 video processor.
AMD Radeon HD 6630M: Successor of the slow clocked (low power) versions of the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with more cores, UVD3 processor and Eyefinity+.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i5:
2540M: Fast Dual-core processor clocked from 2.6 to 3.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.0) based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2620M: Very fast Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i3:
2310M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.1 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card (650/1100MHz).
2350M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
No weight comment found (one expected)!
72%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
