Sony Vaio SV-S Series

The Sony business series laptops have always been ultrabooks even before the ultrabook concept was introduced by Intel in 2011. The new Sony Vaio SV-S series isn’t an exception. It shouts premium in every way imaginable. The Vaio S Series keeps the familiar brushed metallic body with sharp edges from the previous models and is much lighter than what it used to be. Keep in mind though. It is still thicker and heavier than the average ultrabook out there but can be easily carried around.
There is a reason for the extra waist. The Vaio S Series comes with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTM graphics card. Its other specs can also be cranked up to the limits of a performance laptop. Being a business class laptop, the S Series is equipped with a finger print scanner. The backlit keyboard and touchpad that are close to perfection. There is also a Blu-ray drive on the right side to set it further apart from the usual ultrabook.
Although the matte screen offers very good visibility outdoors, the lack of a full-HD resolution is a huge let down as it is what you would expect to see when you are going to pay a huge price for a laptop. Apart from that, the on-board storage simply isn’t enough and it has a poor speaker quality. Its contenders in the Ultrabook category have much more to offer in terms of multimedia and are also cheaper.

The Sony VAIO S is a more than recommendable multimedia notebook. My complaints are relatively minor: an inaccurate clickpad and display lid that's too flexible. There's little not to like otherwise. The VAIO S is extraordinarily thin and light for a 15.5-inch notebook at just 0.95 inches and 4.4 pounds, respectively. The 1080p IPS display is gorgeous; it's hard to find better on a notebook this size, especially for the price. Other things we like about the VAIO S include its backlit keyboard with full-size numeric keypad, magnesium alloy chassis, quiet fan and five hours of battery life. All of this in a package for $899.99? That's a deal.

Relatively thin and light, Sony’s premium VAIO S 15in ‘ultraportable’ makes for a great package with a 1080p/Full HD IPS screen, powerful dedicated graphics, flexible specifications, good connectivity, optional slot-loading Blu-ray drive and more.

A brushed-metal, premium 13in ultraportable available in black or white with optional Blu-ray drive and dedicated game-worthy graphics, Sony’s fully configurable VAIO S13 also enjoys highlights like a high-resolution 1,600 x 900 screen, keyboard backlighting, generous connectivity and an optional battery slice. Overall it’s looking like one of the most flexible ultraportables going, and should make a more than worthy sequel to last year’s VAIO S.

Sony will also be launching an S15 system, a 15.5in S series option along with the S13 when its new Vaio range hits the shelves in June. Exact dates and prices are yet to be confirmed by Sony. But in the meantime, our hands-on time has given us an insight into what customers might expect from the S13 - a portable powerhouse laptop offering an impressive spec for such a small size.

The Sony S Series 13P is a shining example of Sony's ability to craft great laptops and it's practically flawless as an ultraportable business machine. The boxy, executive design might not appeal to all but the usability is certainly up to Sony's usual high standard. If you need a powerful, portable business machine, the Sony Vaio S Series 13P should be topping your list.

Highest end. Is money no object? If one is prepared to spend 3000 Euro ($3660 USD) on a 13.3-inch business notebook, one can certainly delight in the Sony Vaio SV-S13A1Z9E. A 512 GB SSD RAID, 12 GB RAM, and integrated LTE are merely a few of the options that the Vaio has to offer.

For those looking at a portable laptop that keeps an internal DVD burner, the Sony VAIO S is one of the few options left. It does a surprisingly good job with running times that are better than some ultrabooks which is surprisingly for a full laptop and it does offer more storage space. The downside is that it doesn't really have much more to offer that these items.

Despite a few moderate changes to the Sony Vaio S, such as a larger touchpad and improved hardware, we’re still ambivalent about this laptop. We criticized the previous model for its flimsy display lid, so-so build quality, and small battery. All of these flaws remain. Sony really should have taken this opportunity to redesign the chassis, but they didn’t – which puts them behind the market.

The Sony VAIO S13 (SVS13112FXW) isn't the most innovative or robust ultraportable out there. It does, however, have plenty going for it, such as a sleek chassis, WiDi functionality, a decent port selection, and a cheaper price tag than most ultraportables. While its battery life and overall performance falls short of both of the Editors' Choice-winning ultraportables, it's nonetheless a solid choice for anyone seeking to add a bit of flair to their everyday computing.

The $899 Sony VAIO S Series 13 delivers good processing power, a dedicated optical drive, solid battery life and one of the most reliable clickpads we've seen on a notebook. However, the harsh-sounding audio and sluggish hard drive keep it from being a top pick. If you don't mind opting for a bigger screen, the Dell Inspiron 14z packs discrete graphics and an SSD cache and 8GB of RAM for the same price as this Sony.

Sony has cut down on the number of different laptop lines it offers, but you're still left with the Vaio E, S, T, and Z series. Of those, the Vaio S is probably the most universally useful, combining sharp, high-end design with powerful components, a decent set of configuration options, and both 13- and 15-inch screens. The 15-inch Sony Vaio S does gaming, Blu-ray, and a lot more, all while keeping the design thin and light.

The $999 Sony VAIO S Series 15 is a solid all-around performer with a gorgeous 1080p display and attractive design. Despite its relatively light weight, this 15-inch laptop has serious game, too. And while the standard battery offers just about average endurance, adding a sheet battery will help you go all day. Unfortunately, Sony has done little, if anything, to improve its audio performance.

If you're happy to live without the Pro version of Windows, the fingerprint reader and a backlit keyboard, you can get a laptop with very similar specifications for around £300 less. It's unlikely to be as light or last as long away from the mains, though, so the S series should still make your shortlist if you need a fully featured ultraportable and aren't too worried that it's not the fastest around.

We’ve definitely expected much more from a VAIO PC. S15 has a fantastic display, maybe the best ever seen on a portable computer. There’s also the ultralight case, but one which feels cheap, keyboard backlight that annoys during the day, a bunch of brilliantly conceived, but badly implemented shortcuts, a questionable choice of OS, iffy drivers.

Sony's S Series VAIO is a 13.3in notebook that packs plenty of features. It's also attractive and comfortable to use. It's mainly let down by slow performance due to a 5400rpm hard drive. We also wish it had a higher resolution screen and a better ambient light sensor controller.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Intel Core i5:
3210M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 GPU, core clock 2.5 - 3.1 GHz
3320M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 Graphics, core clock 2.6 - 3.3 GHz
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3520M: Fastest Ivy-Bridge-based Dual-Core, 2,9 - 3,6 GHz core clock
3612QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.1 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.1 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1100 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller. The speciality of the i7-3612QM is the low TDP of 35 Watt compared to 45 Watt of the other Ivy Bridge quad core CPUs (e.g. 3610QM).
3540M: Fastest Ivy-Bridge-based Dual-Core, 3.0 - 3,7 GHz core clock
Intel Core i3:
2350M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card.
