The bottom line is that the Sony SR series is a good option for a 13.3-inch notebook, but not the clear choice in its price category. Assuming a price of about $1400, almost every major manufacturer has something on par with this model as 13.3 inches is a now a very popular size and Sony, as usual, comes in on the expensive end of the spectrum. This is a good looking notebook, with a competitive component list and a cool keyboard, as well as some features which trickled down from Sony’s top shelf products but it fails to truly distinguish itself from the likes of the Dell XPS M1330 or HP Pavilion dv3500t, both of which are substantially cheaper than the Sony. Plus now that the new MacBook has arrived, Sony is no longer the leader in terms of aesthetics either.

We knew the SR19 would be challenging for a place on our A List the moment we set eyes on it. This laptop may have a price of around £800 exc VAT, but the quality of its design and the number of genuinely useful extras it packs in make it appear like a much more expensive machine. Its chief benefit, though, is portability. A stunning 1.9kg laptop that offers six hours of battery life, but it's the whole bundle - superb design, extra software and a two-year warranty - that lifts it above the rest.

Laptop manufacturers are queuing up to release products featuring Intel's Centrino 2 platform, with Sony at the front of the line. The VAIO VGN-SR19VN is one of the first Centrino 2-based laptops to hit the shops.
It's a compact and lightweight machine, boasting a 13.3-inch screen, dedicated GPU and a weight of 1.9kg. As with other Centrino 2 laptops, you'll find a 45nm Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a Mobile Intel 45 Express chipset and an 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter included as standard.

At a time when many laptops fit the sub-£500 bracket, laptops at this price point have to offer something special. Does the Sony? Well, we think not. The Sony Vaio VGN-SR29XN/S is a good-looking and performing laptop, but it doesn't offer a whole lot more than many £600 or £700 laptops. Yes, it's a Sony, but if you can entertain buying something else, it'll almost certainly be worth it. Clichés exist for a reason, after all.

In every regard, the Sony VAIO SR series of laptop computers are strikingly impressive. They absolutely ooze the quality and sophistication for which Sony is well known. The down side is that it all comes at a cost. For mobile business professionals, students or home users, you can’t go wrong with this computer if the budget permits.

This attractive thin-and-light notebook has plenty of power and endurance for business users and consumers. Thanks to its good performance and battery life, the $1,359 Sony VAIO VGN-SR390NAB is one of the best 13-inch notebooks you can get at this price. The Dell Studio XPS 13 has even faster graphics for about the same price, and has a more striking design. But, at least for business travelers, we prefer the VAIO SR for its more manageable portability and better endurance.

The Sony VAIO SR390 can be one of the least expensive of the company's ultraportable laptops but it also lacks the performance that can be found for less from other companies or with more features for the same cost. It does come with a LED backlit display that provides some excellent color without producing too much glare from the glossy coating. The keyboard design is also very comfortable and easy to use.

13.3 Inches of Elegance. Sony fully pits on Intel's Centrino-2 platform in the Vaio VGN-SR41M/S. It is pretty well-equipped not only for standard applications, but also for light work in the area of multimedia with an Intel Core 2 Duo T6400, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card, and 4GB of system memory. The following review tells you how the tested pre-serial model meets our requirements.

There are faster laptops on the market, but none of them blend power and portability quite like the 1.83kg VGN-SR41M/S. Indeed, if it weren’t for the iffy build quality and high price, we might have been tempted to honour the Sony with an award. As it stands, though, while the VGN-SR41M/S might impress with its technical achievements – we know of few, if any, 1.8kg laptops with any significant gaming prowess – we just can’t bring ourselves to completely forgive its flaws.

Sony's ultraportable laptop has had some upgrades. Sony's VAIO SR series has been around for a year or so now, sitting in the middle of the company's ultraportable range. The VAIO SR41M/W (£1099 inc. VAT) sees a number of updates to the design and internal components. Although this model marks an evolution rather than a revolution for the SR range, the changes are all welcome and turn this into a very good ultraportable. It's a shame the plastics used inside aren't a little tougher but, that aside, it's a highly impressive machine.

Sony's VGN-SR420J/B is an update to their low cost 13-inch ultraportable that does some things right but suffers from older technology and too much software clutter. The graphics are the key selling point of the laptop with an excellent LED backlit display and a dedicated graphics processor, a rarity in this market class. Sony also provides a wide range of peripheral ports including FireWire and an ExpressCard slot. Its too bad that Sony didn't see the need to also upgrade the memory or reduce the amount of software that hampers performance.

For the price, we were pretty pleased with the Sony Vaio VGN-SR590. It featured amazing performance for its weight-class and size. The laptop has an amazing design, and is highly recommended to students and businessmen on a budget. There were some quality issues, but other than that we were still happy with the laptop.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470: Faster clocked HD 3450 and successor of the HD 2400 XT but with DirectX 10.1 and due to the new 55nm process, higher clockspeeds. Avivo HD video functions allow the decoding of HD videos.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: Lower middle-class GPU that features a low shader count and a 64 Bit memory bus but a high clock speed. Similar to the desktop Radeon 4550. Supports Avivo HD and DirectX 10.1.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
P8400:
Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).
T9800:
High end dual core CPU for laptops with 6 MB level 2 cache and 2.93 GHz. Well suited for demanding games (of 2009) and applications (especially single threaded).
T6400: Entry level dual core processor based on the Penryn core with only 2 MB level 2 cache and a low clock speed.
P8600:
Fast but still not overpriced dual core CPU. For most games and multimedia applications sufficient and due to the 25W TDP even for smaller notebooks useable.
P8800: Mid-range dual core processor with 3 MB level 3 cache and a TDP of 25 Watt.
T6500:
Entry level Penryn based dual-core CPU with a small 2MB level 2 cache and FSB800. Similar to the T6570 but without VT-x.
T6600: Entry level Core 2 Duo dual core processor with a small 2MB level 2 cache and without virtualization functions.
