Short review of the Orico M20 portable SSD: How does the external SSD with 2 TB of storage space perform in practice?

The Orico M20 external SSD with 2 TB offers high speeds and ample storage space in a compact, durable design. In this review, we test its read and write speeds, assess its suitability for everyday use, and evaluate its build quality to see if it meets expectations.

Orico, a manufacturer known for its innovative storage solutions and computer accessories, has built a strong reputation for high-quality external hard drive enclosures, SSDs, and USB hubs. From their diverse portfolio, we had the opportunity to test one of their external SSDs, featuring 2 TB of storage space, which we'll be reviewing briefly here.

The Orico M20 SSD is available in three different storage capacities, starting at 512 GB, with the top model offering a generous 2 TB. Prices for these models range from US$59.99 for the smallest version up to US$179.99 for the 2 TB variant. Data transfer is facilitated through a USB connection with speeds of up to 20 Gbit/s. While this is only half the bandwidth of USB 4, Orico advertises transfer speeds of up to 2000 MB/s, which is still competitive for external storage devices.

Case and connectivity - A metal case and active cooling

It comes in a modest package. The external storage unit makes a strong visual and tactile impression, with a combination of metal and plastic. A transparent plastic cover is provided to protect the underside from scratches, although the top remains exposed. While the protective cover is a bit bulky, it’s acceptable given the compact size of the SSD. The shape and dimensions of the case are optimal, allowing the SSD to be stored easily. Orico has opted not to include active cooling for the M20 SSD, ensuring silent operation at all times.

Performance - Slightly slower than expected

Based on the technical specifications of the Orico M20 SSD, the device is expected to achieve transfer speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s. The company does not specify whether this figure refers to the read or write speed. When using an optimal connection, the SSD comes close to the advertised rate for sequential reading. Paired with the Asus NUC 14 Pro+, we were able to achieve a solid 1,676 MB/s for writing. In everyday use, the SSD performs exceptionally well for transferring large volumes of data quickly.

When connected to a USB interface with just 10 Gbit/s, only half of the potential bandwidth is available, which is reflected in the synthetic AS SSD test. However, the Orico M20 SSD struggles to match the speeds of SSDs equipped with USB4.

Temperature and stress test

The casing temperatures remain within acceptable limits and do not raise any concerns. Whether idle or under load, the SSD becomes noticeably warm, but there is no significant difference between the two conditions. The absence of an active cooling unit ensures silent operation. To assess real-world performance, we copied a test file to the SSD. Initially, we observed a transfer rate of just over 1 GB/s, which is slightly slower than the speeds recorded in synthetic benchmarks. This test was conducted using a USB 3.2 interface with 20 Gbit/s. After a while, the SSD throttled the speed, reducing the transfer rate to just under 800 MB/s. Although this indicates some speed throttling, the SSD maintains an adequate long-term performance that should be more than enough for the majority of users.

Verdict - Chic SSD with subtle weaknesses

In review: Orico M20 with 2 TB storage space. Test device provided by Orico.

The Orico M20 SSD offers ample storage space in its top configuration while maintaining a compact form factor. Its build quality is flawless, combining metal and plastic to create a device that not only looks good but feels premium as well. Performance-wise, the SSD excels in synthetic benchmarks, fully utilizing the USB interface's bandwidth. However, in real-world use, it doesn't quite reach those peak performance levels, which is worth noting. Despite this, the SSD doesn't have any major flaws.

The Orico M20 SSD balances storage capacity with a stylish design.

Its slim and modern design makes it easy to slip into a pocket, making it an ideal travel companion. One potential downside is the choice of interface if you aim to take full advantage of the 20 Gbit/s bandwidth. Even at 10 Gbit/s, it performs well for occasional data transfers. However, if you regularly move large amounts of data, opting for an external SSD with USB 4 speed would be a better choice.

Price and availability

The Orico M20 SSD is available on Amazon for US$179.99. You can save an additional 20% with the code P2B8WWO8. The smaller models are also available on Amazon, with the 512 GB model priced at US$59.99 and the 1 TB version costing US$109.99.
