Scout Android launcher shuts down

Scout Launcher for Android shuts down
Scout Launcher
Although it was always well received by its users and has plenty of them, this contextual launcher for Android will be soon shutting down.

Google Now is a good launcher for Android, but there are plenty of better ones freely available for anyone to download and take for a spin. Scout Launcher is one of them, being always included in "best of" lists and usually grabbing one of the top 3 positions. Unfortunately, its developers have decided to shut it down by next Wednesday, March 2nd.

Scout Launcher will cease all operations next week, so the servers will shut down and the app will be withdrawn from the Google Play Store as well. While its users will have to install another launcher and there are a lot of interesting choices lying around, the team behind Scout Launcher recommends switching to Google Now "as it comes closest to the Scout vision."

The reason behind this exit is that while user ratings stayed above 4.5 and the average Scout Launcher user spent 30 minutes a day to use it, the amount of users was simply not large enough. According to the team behind this project, they "came short on getting Scout on millions and millions of phones" and this is how another worthy Android launcher goes down.

Although I have been writing about new software and hardware for almost a decade, I consider myself to be old school. I always enjoy listening to music on CD or tape instead of digital files and I will not even get into the touchscreen vs physical keys debate. However, I also enjoy new technology, as I now have the chance to take a look at the future every day. I joined the Notebookcheck crew back in 2013 and I have no plans to leave the ship anytime soon.
