A previous rumour suggested Nvidia would eventually launch a 24 GB variant of the GeForce RTX 5080. The GB503 GPU powering it would come with a memory bus width of 256 bits, meaning it would need 3 GB VRAM modules. We might see it in action sooner than we think thanks to Samsung.
The chipmaker has just unveiled its new 24 Gb GDDR7 VRAM modules with eight 3 GB modules working together. Historically, consumer graphics cards often stuck to 2 GB modules, so the bump to 3 GB opens up a world of possibilities of OEMs. You can now have a 128-bit GPU with up to 12 GB VRAM, something Nvidia will definitely consider for its laptop SKUs.
Samsung says its new 24 Gb GDDR7 modules can hit speeds of up to 42.5 Gbps while being 30% more power efficient compared to its GDRR6 counterparts. One can attribute these improvements to the 5th-generation 10 nm manufacturing process these chips are made on.
Products featuring the new 24 Gb GDDR7 modules will be validated this year and hit shelves in 2025. While they could find their way in a few gaming GPUs with 24 GB or 12 GB VRAM, they'll likely be used more for AI-centric SKUs from Nvidia and AMD.
