Not a bad laptop, just a slightly naff-looking one.

Even with a mediocre display, a thin roster of ports, and barely sufficient audio, the Samsung Q430 has enough positives to win over midrange buyers. In particular, the laptop's strong processor and good battery performance help you overlook its shortcomings. The Samsung Q430 skimps on the display and ports, but strong performance and battery life do much to offset that problem.

It's one of the best-looking 14-inch notebooks of the year, and one of the most comfortable thin-and-light notebooks we've used. Plus, the Q430-11 performs well--whether you're watching HD movies online or playing games--and it stays cool under pressure. However, we'd like this machine a lot more if it lasted at least 4 hours on a charge. If you don't plan on moving this machine around much, the Q430-11 is an enticing choice, but we think even home users would appreciate more endurance.

The latest Samsung Q430 had a lot to live up to, with its predecessors setting the bar when it comes to affordable portable computing. Thankfully, it more than lives up to expectations, delivering a stylish, powerful, portable and lightweight package at a price that’s still competitive. If the Samsung Q430 falls within your budget, it’s well worth a look.

In an earlier retail laptop roundup, we were surprised to discover that the $829 Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US was one of the best all-around values in the midrange category. It was a complete package with a Blu-ray drive, Nvidia graphics chip, and an Intel Core i5 processor in a 15-inch body that didn't look half-bad. An impressively designed surprise, the Samsung Q430-11 is a feature-packed, fast laptop that looks more expensive than it is.
