Spot, a four-legged robot from Boston Dynamics, is set to provide autonomous support to the Dutch police in the future. The specially equipped model has a lot to offer, and not just thanks to its AI-supported approach.

Robot dog Spot has been helping in the fight against drug-related crime in the Netherlands since 2021. It can fit through the smallest gaps, open doors independently and lift up to 7 kilograms.

In this way, he primarily assists in the investigation of suspected drug labs and hiding places. At the same time, it ensures that police officers do not put themselves in danger. Firearms have little effect on the dog, at least it can be easily repaired or replaced. Explosions caused by chemical substances also pose no major danger.

Until now, however, the robots have been controlled by a human, who of course also needs a stable radio connection. This is a major weakness that will soon be eliminated after thorough training in a simulated drug laboratory.

Equipped with visual and thermal sensors, acoustic recording, numerous cameras and the gripper arm, it should be able to search rooms independently. It helps that it can not only pick up heavy objects, but also push aside more than 20 kilograms.

In the meantime, it should be able to search a room for people present first. Potentially hazardous substances and chemicals can then be identified and, if necessary, sealed in secure containers.

Only then is it necessary and much safer for the police to take a look for themselves. The risk of unexpected contact with criminals, even if that is still the ultimate goal, or with hazardous chemicals is then largely averted.

The slim, indestructible and self-searching robot can already investigate the next suspicion in the meantime. However, further tests are currently being carried out, as autonomously moving robot dogs not only create a feeling of additional safety.
