Rivian R2 priced cheaper than Tesla Model Y with longer range and higher clearance specs
Update: The Rivian R2 has now been unveiled with a $45,000 price tag, 300+ miles of range, NACS port, 5 lie-flat seat and a powered rear window. Rivian also announced a cheaper R3 line on the same platform.
The price of the upcoming Rivian R2 SUV should start from $47,500 and its battery will be good for about 330 miles on a charge, according to some Rivian website data mining.
The source code also revealed that the R2 will offer 9.8 inches of maximum ground clearance, making it more offroad-y than the Tesla Model Y and its 6.6 inches.
Rivian R2 vs Model Y range and price
The purchase price of a Model Y Long Range, the only Tesla model that can compare to the Rivian R2, is $48,990 before federal tax credits or any other subsidies or incentives.
Not only will the Rivian R2 be cheaper than the Model Y then, but it will also offer greater range at that price, 330 miles vs 310 miles for the Model Y LR, plus it will come with a NACS port for faster Supercharging.
It remains to be seen if the Rivian R2 will qualify for the full $7,500 in federal tax credit at the point of purchase, though, as that could tip the scale in Tesla's favor.

Rivian already announced the R2 release date of March 7, when CEO RJ Scaringe will take the stage to unveil the company's first midrange SUV designed to take on the Tesla Model Y directly.
Rivian's CEO is betting that the mass market R2 will help the company turn its financials around, while Elon Musk is of the opinion that if Rivian continues to bleed money like that, it will be bankrupt in a few quarters.
