Superchargers that look like gas stations open as Tesla prices Ford charging 30% higher

Tesla has to ensure CCS compatibility at federally funded Superchargers and it complies by building out an arguable still limited amount of stations with combined Magic Dock connectors.

Until all EV makers that have announced the adoption of Tesla's open-source NACS port start installing those in their cars next year, however, there needed to be a stopgap solution. For Ford, it comes in the form of a free CCS-to-NACS adapter that CEO Jim Farley tested the other day and said more info will be available soon.

More info has already come by none other than Tesla which officially announced the opening of its Supercharger network to other EVs with a promo video it was caught filming earlier in the week. There, it demonstrates how easy it is to plug a Tesla NACS connector into the CCS adapter and then into the CCS port of your Ford, Rivian, GM, Volvo, Polestar, or any other electric vehicle.

Ford was one of the earliest and most enthusiastic adopters of Tesla's North American Charging Standard  and its electric vehicles are now first to gain Supercharger access. Tesla says that Rivian, GM, Volvo, and Polestar will follow this spring.

As to how much does it cost to charge a Ford F-150 Lightning or a Mustang Mach-E at a Tesla Supercharger, it depends on whether one gets a membership rate or not. For a subscription fee of $12.99/month, Ford EV owners will get the same prices for charging at a Supercharger station as Tesla owners. If they only want to fast charge occasionally, however, Tesla has priced Supercharger access about 30% higher per kWh than for its own electric cars.

Tesla's Superchargers are the largest and most established EV charging network worldwide and opening them to other electric cars may become a significant business venture on its own. According to Wedbush analysts, Superchargers could become the next gas stations and bring Tesla $10 billion annually by the time federal subsidies expire in 2032.

Even in the most conservative EV adoption scenario, the Supercharger network may be worth $42 billion for Tesla, according to Morgan Stanley estimates.

As if to solidify that outlook, Tesla has now opened the first Supercharger location in Germany that looks and operates much like a regular highway gas station, complete with big screens displaying the current prices per kWH for the cars that drive by.

Not only that, but it also shows the working hours of the coffee shop inside, as well as lists other amenities typical for gas stations like restrooms, stores, and even a lounge area. Sign of the times.
