For years, QuantumScape has been considered a leading developer of anode-free solid-state batteries. In collaboration with PowerCo – a Volkswagen subsidiary focusing on battery technology – the company recently showcased a Ducati V21L fully powered by QSE-5 battery cells during Volkswagen’s press conference at IAA Mobility 2025.
From the lab to the stage
These QSE-5 solid-state cells were manufactured at QuantumScape’s pilot line in San José using the company’s proprietary Cobra process. They are the first of their kind to be integrated into a functional vehicle.
"Today we've crossed the threshold from possibility to reality,"
said Dr Siva Sivaram, president of QuantumScape, in a press release. Ducati was brought on as a demonstration partner for the launch, contributing its motorsports expertise to the development process.
Fast charging and high performance
According to QuantumScape, QSE-5 solid-state batteries are capable of charging from 10% to 80% within about twelve minutes. Offering high energy density and long cycle life, the technology addresses two key challenges in electromobility: range and charging speed.
Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo, emphasised in Munich:
"Solid-state batteries will redefine what's possible for high-performance, premium vehicles, and today’s historic demonstration is just the beginning."
Strategic investment
To accelerate the industrialisation of the technology, PowerCo will invest another US$131 million in QuantumScape over the next two years. The agreement includes milestone-based payments tied to advancements in the pilot production line. The goal is to scale the production of these anode-free solid-state batteries to the gigawatt-hour level in the medium term and integrate them into future Volkswagen and Ducati vehicles.
