Many tech employees have been laid off this year already
Despite soaring stock prices and strong earnings, the tech industry has already seen massive layoffs this year. Giants like Intel, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Oracle, and others have all announced significant job cuts — driven both by shareholder pressure to reduce costs and by rapid advances in AI and automation.

For most of Big Tech, 2025 has been a solid year financially — Intel being the notable exception. But for employees, job security feels increasingly fragile. According to an analysis by RationalFX, a total of 166,387 tech workers have been laid off so far in 2025. The report pulls information from U.S. WARN notices, job board TrueUp, TechCrunch, and the layoff tracker Layoffs.fyi.

Intel tops the list. The struggling chipmaker plans to cut around 34,000 jobs this year as it tries to streamline operations and reset its strategy.

Microsoft isn’t far behind. The Redmond-based giant has already gone through multiple rounds of layoffs: roughly 6,000 roles in April and another 9,000 in July, RationalFX foresees a total of at least 19,215 positions in 2025 eliminated in the name of efficiency.

India’s Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) ranks third, with an estimated 12,000 employees let go this year, largely as part of cost-cutting measures and the rollout of AI-driven automation.

Cuts haven’t stopped there. Almost every major player has made reductions:

  • IBM is phasing out about 9,000 HR roles, shifting many of those responsibilities to AI.

  • STMicroelectronics, the European chipmaker, is cutting 5,000 jobs.

  • Salesforce shed 1,000 positions in February and another 4,000 in September.

  • Meta has already let go of 3,720 staff this year, continuing a pattern from previous years.

  • Amazon eliminated over 3,350 jobs, including through the closure of all its Canadian warehouses.

  • Oracle laid off 3,000 workers in just the past two months.

  • Even Elon Musk’s xAI joined the trend, dismissing 500 employees who had worked on training its chatbot Grok.

AI itself is emerging as a major factor. Analysts estimate that roughly 37,702 of the layoffs this year were directly tied to automation and the adoption of AI tools that replaced human tasks outright.

Looking ahead, RationalFX forecasts that total tech layoffs could climb to 235,000 by the end of 2025.
