Microsoft can afford to hire big name celebrities to help endorse its software and hardware. Having the influential talk show host and professional book recommender Oprah Winfrey praise their brand new tablet must have felt like quite a coup for Microsoft management. Someone from Winfrey's camp posted this comment to her official Twitter account on 19 November 2012: "Gotta say love that SURFACE! Have bought 12 already as Christmas gifts." Unfortunately for Microsoft, the tweet had the tag "via Twitter for iPad" attached to it.
Of course, there are several explanations to what could have happened: it might not have been Oprah who actually sent the tweet; or she only had an iPad to hand when it was time to send the likely sponsored message. The iPad related tag has now been removed from Winfrey's Twitter page, but not before many people had noticed the faux pas.
Winfrey has over 14.8 million followers on Twitter, but not all of them turned a blind eye to the mistake, with one brave tweeter commenting: "How much more would Microsoft have had to pay you to get you to post that tweet from a Surface instead of an iPad?" (@srbaker).
