Apparently, Oppo found a way to safely implement "air-charging" into smartphones using a new FreeVOOC coil and an electromagnetic emitter that has a 10-meter range. This allows the batteries to constantly charge at 5-10 W while in the range of said emitter, so the phone supposedly never runs out of juice.

It looks like Oppo is ready to take wireless charging to the next level with a system that allows phones to continuously charge when within 10 meters from a special laser device. This information was conveyed via a teaser video, which was posted on Weibo earlier today, April 1, so we are not entirely sure if Oppo is trolling us.

The video does not seem to have been put together in jest, as the graphics quality and production value are quite high. Oppo claims that the revolutionary “air-charging” will be implemented on an upcoming handset called Reno Ace Infinity, which is said to be integrating a FreeVOOC coil in the phone rim. The coil system made of an absorption layer, a conversion layer and a conductive material is apparently able to continuously provide 5-10 W of charging power if placed within 10 meters of a spherical device that emits concentrated electromagnetic (EM) radiation.

Now, if this is indeed real, there may be some implementation issues to consider. First off, the constant emissions of highly-focused electromagnetic radiation could prove harmful to the human body, especially when holding the phone. Secondly, the 10 meter range may lead to intermittent charging capabilities, which could be fixed with an EM booster, but then we are immediately causing even more harm for the human body. It will be interesting to see how Oppo is going to solve these problems, and hopefully the company is not just fooling us with a nice video presentation.

Update: Turns out it really is an April Fools hoax. The production value of the video itself is something else, though.
