Doom (2016) has been heavily discounted on GOG. The game bought the franchise back from a thirteen-year hiatus and, like the original that launched in 1993, set a new benchmark for FPS games.

2004's Doom 3 was largely considered to be a damp squib because it tried to do many things at once and failed spectacularly at all of them. idSoftware took that lesson and went back to the drawing board for thirteen whole years. It re-emerged in 2016 with Doom. And that, unlike its predecessor, took the gaming world by storm. Given it is almost nine years old at this point, the game can run on just about any PC built in the past decade, and even on handhelds like the Steam Deck.

Doom (popularly known as Doom 2016) revitalized the franchise and cranked everything up to eleven. It took a largely overlooked protagonist and made a myth out of him. The generic Doomguy was now replaced with the Doom Slayer, a demon devastator of epic proportions, the personification of ultra-violence. Right off the bat, you start off bashing an unfortunate imp's skull into the coffin, and your decimation gets exponentially worse from there.

Doom 2016 takes place on Mars, where you wake up in the midst of an invasion from hell. You're tasked with shutting the invasion down, like you've done countless times before. Unlike previous Doom games, this one has a semblance of a story, although you're free to ignore it. After all, there are demons to slay, and you can't let plot points get in your way.

Like the many games that came before it, Doom 2016 has a wide selection of weapons, including legendary ones like the Super Shotgun and BFG. And now, the chainsaw is actually usable and will be an active part of your arsenal. The act of tearing a demon to shreds with a chainsaw and then watching it explode into ammo is truly satisfying.

While Doom 2016 is undoubtedly a technical masterpiece with fast-paced combat, its soundtrack is what sets the game apart from anything released in the past 20 years. Mick Gordon's unholy fusion of Djent, metal and industrial music makes blasting through waves of hell fiends feel all the more visceral. And it makes for great workout music. Seriously, try it.

Doom 2016 can be bought on GOG for just $3.99. While it has been cheaper on Steam, it is full price on the platform right now. Besides, it is an excellent time to pick up Doom 2016 if you're unfamiliar with the franchise. With Doom: The Dark Ages scheduled to drop on May 15 on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Game Pass, you can play the game that started it all and then move over to its sequel, Doom Eternal.
