OnePlus 3 facing RAM management criticisms
A short video comparing the performance of the OnePlus 3 and Samsung Galaxy S7 has ignited a discussion on Twitter about the disappointing storage management software of the OnePlus 3 despite its roomy 6 GB of RAM. Last year's Galaxy S6 apparently suffered from similar issues as well. OnePlus CEO Carl Pei has responded to the allegations by claiming that the underperforming RAM was intentional in order to improve battery life. He further clarified that having 6 GB of RAM is still very new in the smartphone world and that the OnePlus development team is continuing to work on improvements and optimizations.
XDA includes a handy guide for those brave enough to root and tinker with their new OnePlus 3 smartphones and to make specific changes in the system directory. The procedure alters the way the smartphone manages RAM to the point where users are able to run many more applications in the background when compared to stock settings. While this opens up more RAM space for users, it's possible that such modifications can also impact battery life or cause instabilities.
