Koltera 2 is basically a rebuilt version of the original Koltera from 2013.
Solo dev Braymen released Koltera 2 on March 6, 2026, as a 100% free-to-play incremental RPG. The title features over 120 unique creatures and offline progression. It has secured a 95% "Positive" rating since its debut.

Independent dev Braymen officially launched Koltera 2 on Steam this past Friday - this is the full release of the sequel to 2023’s Koltera. After a whole year of solo development, the creator chose to keep the title entirely free of charge, and that includes a total absence of microtransactions or paid DLC. This is the same philosophy established with the first game to make it easy for players to hop on, despite the developer mentioning they had considered a premium price point to offset expensive creature art costs.

Key specs and data

The game is a lightweight "skilling" idler built for automation.

  • Content: Launches with 120 unique creatures to collect, 190+ items, and a dedicated skill tree.
  • Automation: Features 6 gathering skills and 3 workstation skills that creatures can automate.
  • Offline Progress: The game engine supports full "catch-up" mechanics - players can progress while the application is closed.
  • Hardware: Requires only 1 GB of RAM and 500 MB of storage space.
  • Rating: Currently has a 95% positive rating from early players on Steam.

Koltera 2 is basically a ground-up rebuild of its predecessor. The developer moved the project to a new engine to fix "horrid" balancing issues and unintuitive loops found in the original 2023 title. Although the first Koltera got criticized for repetitive mid-game grinds and confusing trading systems, the sequel seems to have a more streamlined experience with new dungeon mechanics and an "Awakening" prestige system to keep numbers moving.

Going back to the most important aspect of this launch, the developer's "anti-monetization" stance (which usually doesn't apply to idle games) is clearly a major reason why the game is currently sitting at the top of the "Trending Upcoming" chart on Steam. By providing a high-quality creature collector for free, Braymen is effectively building a "portfolio" community, like we've seen with a bunch of other F2P titles. Early reviews show that while the game is "very idle," the 120 unique creature designs have made it a great "second monitor" game for the community.

If number-crunching idlers like Melvor Idle or Idleon are your thing, but you still want a version without microtransactions, Koltera 2 is worth a look. It is particularly well-suited for low-spec laptops and Steam Deck (curr. $940 on Amazon for a renewed 512 GB variant) users.
