On Saturday, we reported on Samsung registering a trademark with the EUIPO for Armor Layer and Armor Skin, both described as smartphone and smartwatch frames. Now, Nils Ahrensmeier has published an overview of Samsung's planned smartwatches for this year, which is expected to be just the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4.
Samsung has not released the Galaxy Watch Active 3, but this will be the first year that the company releases Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active smartwatches simultaneously. Until now, Samsung has alternated between the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active series, which explains why there is no Galaxy Watch 2. According to Ahrensmeier, Samsung plans to release the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 in the following variants:
- Galaxy Watch 4 - 42 mm (SM-R880)
- Galaxy Watch 4 - 46 mm (SM-R890)
- Galaxy Watch Active 4 - 40 mm (SM-R860)
- Galaxy Watch Active 4 - 42 mm (SM-R870)
Ahrensmeier's claims are in line with those made by GalaxyClub in February, which asserted that Samsung was developing the SM-R86x and SM-R87x. If these sizes are accurate, then the largest Galaxy Watch 4 will be 1 mm bigger than the Galaxy Watch 3, with the largest Galaxy Watch Active 4 coming at 2 mm less than the Galaxy Watch Active 2. Samsung is expected to switch from Tizen to Wear OS this year too, although this remains unconfirmed for the time being. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 are believed to be launching this summer.
