Microsoft updates its compact Surface Pro 12 with an efficient Snapdragon X2 Plus processor and a new 90 Hz display, although its quality is slightly worse than before.

We have just reviewed the 2026 Microsoft Surface Pro 12. This compact convertible remains a truly distinctive offering on the market, as it is the only fanless Windows device powered by a Snapdragon processor. This year's model uses an efficient Snapdragon X2 Plus with 6 processor cores. Single-core and graphics performance have improved slightly over the previous model. Multi-core performance, however, is actually slightly lower, as its predecessor had an 8-core processor. Nevertheless, performance is more than adequate for everyday tasks. Microsoft carries over the chassis unchanged from its predecessor, retaining its typically high rigidity. In addition to the integrated kickstand, it also features a magnetic attachment for the optional Surface Pen. Compatible keyboard covers are available separately.

At first glance, the display also appears unchanged, as it is still a 12-inch IPS touchscreen with a 90 Hz refresh rate. However, while last year's panel was supplied by BOE, the current model uses a panel from Sharp. This display is marginally brighter, but its black level and consequently its maximum contrast ratio are worse. Response times are also slightly slower, and visible ghosting occurs even in 90 Hz mode. In addition, the display appears to consume slightly more power, as battery life is marginally shorter than on the previous model. The relatively weak speakers are another drawback.

All in all, the Surface Pro 12 remains largely unrivaled thanks to its passive cooling. It offers a full Windows system with decent performance in a compact package for use on the go. At home, it can also easily be connected to a large monitor and used as a regular, silent PC.
