Reviews for the Microsoft Lumia 650

Mainstream Microsoft. The new Lumia 650 from Microsoft wants to convince users with competitive pricing and obviously the Windows operating system. The manufacturer from Redmond targets business customers in particular. Because of the slow hardware, however, there are some limitations, including the lack of the Windows Continuum feature.

The 600 series within the Lumia line-up has always been where the best of budget and premium combine to offer something distinctive. From the 620 through to the 640, these have been popular, powerful devices. The Lumia 650 is a different beast. It's the experience of using this phone that sets it apart. The lovely in-hand feel, the dependable camera, the decent battery life, the surprisingly good speakers and the mostly smooth day-to-day operation are all key to what a good smartphone experience should be.

The Microsoft Lumia 650 provides a mostly adequate experience, making it a solid choice for an entry-level Windows 10 handset. It's nicely put together and handles well. The screen and speaker are of good quality and make for enjoyable multimedia. The hardware is competent enough to ensure smooth basic functionality, though it isn't capable of more than that. For an entry-level phone, the Lumia 650 delivered better photo quality than we expected, but then there's the borderline unusable camcorder.

There’s plenty to like about the Lumia 650. It offers up a great design that makes it look and feel far more expensive than it actually is, and the OLED screen is one of the best I’ve seen on an affordable smartphone. While I’m still not convinced that Windows 10 Mobile is great for general consumers, for business users the Lumia 650 ticks all the right boxes.

In its second generation since going solo, the Microsoft lineup is keeping up the ambition and drive. It's obviously the flagship that sets the tone but the lower ranks do have a purpose in the greater scheme as well. Especially when you consider that Microsoft intends to have a lot fewer devices in its portfolio this time around.

In some ways Microsoft has its upped standards, but only at a surface level. The screen and metal-rimmed design make a great first impression, but the slow performance and water-treading hardware in other areas make it seem less of a smart buy than several Androids around the same price.

Without the draw of Windows 10 Continuum, it feels like the Lumia 650 is perpetually on the back foot. It never really makes the most of its new operating system, and there's very little to distinguish it from its Windows Phone 8-based predecessors apart from its metal frame and beautiful OLED display.

Microsoft Lumia 650 hands-on
Source: GSM Arena English Archive.org version
Still, the interface is smooth, apps (people, phone) load quick, scrolling through long lists was a breeze. The camera interface was reasonably snappy too. The browser takes its time to re-render the page as you pan and zoom, though. That's what you get with a low-power chipset and a single gig of RAM.

Windows 10, quality build on a budget
Source: Pocket Lint English Archive.org version
The build quality of the Lumia 650 is decent enough for the money and the screen, despite being 720p, does its job well. There's a heft to the handset that makes it feel strong, like it will last. Limitations to processing power, camera resolution and connectivity really pull the phone down. Yes the price is low at £150, but without Windows 10 Continuum, 4G or 1080p video recording it'll be a no go for some.

60% A smartphone that might have been great
Source: PC Pro English Archive.org version
After first setting eyes on its slim form and understated design, I wanted to like the Microsoft Lumia 650. Its screen is great, the camera isn’t bad and there are plenty of elements of Windows 10 Mobile that I like. But it's completely spoiled by Microsoft's decision to hobble the performance of the phone by shoehorning in a processor so low on power that not even Windows Phone can make it look good.

40% Microsoft Lumia 650 review - great design, terrible chipset
Source: Expert Reviews English Archive.org version
This is such a shame, as this would have been a great Windows phone if only it had a decent processor inside it. Battery life was very respectable at 11h 36m in our continuous video playback test with the screen brightness set to 170cd/m2, and its screen and build quality are practically second to none in its price range. However, when it's so crippled by its bad choice of chipset, the Lumia 650 just can't measure up to its infinitely superior predecessor. If you're looking for a cheap Windows handset, the Lumia 640 is still your best choice, as you can now pick one up for £120 SIM-free or £90 on pre-pay. The only silver lining is that this could be the basis for a great mid-range Windows phone just around the corner.

However, the limited performance and lack of killer features such as Continuum make it difficult to recommend as a business device, especially as the competition from the Android market is very strong. For less money you can grab a Moto G, Wileyfox Swift or Vodafone Prime Ultra, which offer excellent features and dependable performance. And if you’re dead set on Windows, you can still pick up last year’s brilliant Lumia 640 LTE for under £100.

Comment

Model: The Microsoft Lumia 650 is considered the best looking Lumia in a long time. On top of that, the pricing is also very attractive. Design and construction of the phone are superb. The phone is gorgeous to look at and there is nothing exaggerated about the design. It comes with Windows 10 Mobile edition, a quad core 1.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 and 1 GB of RAM. Sadly, the performance of the smartphone is below par with this choice of processor as it is considered quite near to the lower end. There is nothing major to complain about except that it chugs from time to time. It has 16 GB internal storage and the storage capacity can be expanded by 200 GB with a MicroSD card.

The smartphone's 5 inch AMOLED screen is only capable to display up to 1280 x 720 resolution, but it has great colors, decent blacks and text is sharp enough for reading. There is a 8 MP camera on the back and a 5 MP camera on the front. The images produced can be a little on the warm side at times and with a little bit of over saturation. The camera is not good in low lighting. The Lumia 650 has a weight of 122 g and a removable 2000 mAh battery. This allows the user to switch and replace batteries whenever they ran out of power.

Qualcomm Adreno 304: Integrated mid-range graphics card in the Snapdragon 210 SoCs that supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and features unified shaders.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

This display is tiny. You will probably see very little on the screen and be able to use mini-resolutions.

Microsoft:

Microsoft smartphones and tablets have been tested since 2012. There are many reviews with average ratings. The reader's interest is quite given, but the market share is not big enough for the Top 5 smartphone manufacturers (as of 2016).

69.02%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
