An alleged press invite made the rounds on Weibo promoting an upcoming Meizu event on January 27th. Based on the information from past leaks, this event will take place on the days leading up to the expected launch of the M5s sometime after Chinese New Year.
For the most part, the specs on the new phone revealed in the leaks offer only an incremental upgrade over the older Meizu M5 released last October. The M5s will use MediaTek's MT6753 SoC and provide a greater variety of RAM and storage upgrades than the M5. Customers can choose between 3GB and 4GB RAM variants as well as 16GB/32GB/64GB storage options.
Those hoping for any improvements to the camera, battery or OS will probably be disappointed that these features appear to have seen few changes in this iteration. Instead, the newer battery will have slightly smaller capacity than the one in the older model, decreasing from 3070 mAh in the M5 to 2930 mAh in the M5s.
With other budget or midrange phones such as the Redmi Note 4 sporting huge 4100 mAh batteries, Meizu cannot compete on that front. What Meizu has going for them on the M5s will be the low price point as the base model of the M5 cost a mere $100.
