MediaTek's Dimensity line of SoCs has successfully managed to bring the chipmaker's silicon on par with Qualcomm's offerings. Smartphones that run Dimensity chips are still few and far between, though. That hasn't stopped the Taiwanese company from working on newer, cheaper versions of the silicon. A report says that MediaTek is working on a new Dimensity 600 line of chips.
Taiwanese media outlet ITHome states that MediaTek is on track to release the Dimensity 600 sometime this quarter. As its name suggests, it will likely be a scaled-down version of the Dimensity 800. We can expect to see it unveiled alongside an upcoming low-cost 5G-ready smartphone later this year.
The MediaTek Dimensity 600's specs remain unknown at this point. We're probably looking at a combination of Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 cores. Newer Cortex-A76 cores seem unlikely as it would undercut the Dimensity 800 series. MediaTek could also go the efficiency route and pack the chip with eight Cortex-A55 cores as it did with the recently announced Helio G35 and Helio G25.
