As the Tesla Model S Plaid and its blazing-fast acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under 2 seconds highlights, all-electric drivetrains are not just economically sustainable but can also provide neck-breaking performance. Due to the progress in the often overlooked segment of electric two-wheelers, a ten-year-old land speed record now appears to be in jeopardy as it could be beaten by the Lightning Strike.
According to an article by Electrek, Richard Hatfield, CEO of the American electric motorcycle manufacturer Lightning, plans to beat the current land speed record for electric motorcycles once again and is therefore developing a modified version of the Lightning Strike. The current record dates back to 2012, which is when the Lightning LS-218 managed to reach a tremendously fast 218 mph. Hatfield now anticipates that the the Lightning Strike could possibly improve that record to 250 mph.
However, the most powerful model of the electric motorcycle and its stock 122 hp motor can only reach top speeds of up to 150 mph, which is why a special aerodynamic streamliner is being developed in order for it to become the fastest electric motorcycle in the world. In addition, the Lightning Strike's drivetrain will be upgraded with an improved inverter and a new high-performing battery so that the electric superbike can indeed break the aforementioned land speed record which will likely be attempted at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the state of Utah.
