The Taiwan-based PC manufacturer Micro-Star International (MSI) has just announced two new high-performance notebooks. Reportedly, with the introduction of the X460 and X460DX models the company marks the “beginning of a new era in light, powerful laptops”. Targeted towards home users or professionals on-the-go, these units will presumably deliver high-productivity computing and a stylish design.

Configuration

The two systems are part of MSI’s X-Slim Series of portable computers and will be equipped with 14-inch LED-backlit widescreen displays that offer a maximum supported resolution of 1366-by-768 pixels.  In addition, these notebooks will be powered by a choice of second generation Sandy Bridge central processing units. Customers can purchase the X460DX with an Intel Core i5-2410M, whereas the X460 is also available with a quad-core Intel Core i7-2630QM chip clocked at 2.0GHz (goes up to 2.9GHz via Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology) and ranked 15 in our CPU Benchmark List.

According to the manufacturer, the X460DX will support MSI GPU Boost Technology that allows users to switch between the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics controller and an NVIDIA GeForce 540M (DirectX11) card with 1GB of dedicated VRAM. Both laptops will reportedly house up to 8GB of internal DDR3 memory and up to a 750GB rotating hard drive (HDD) along with an optional SSD. A DVD Super Multi optical drive is also installed.

Connectivity

MSI’s new X-Slim notebooks will supposedly sport built-in Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g/n, Gigabit LAN and Bluetooth 3.0 modules. Furthermore, consumers will be provided with three USB ports (2xUSB 3.0 and 1xUSB 2.0), an HDMI interface, a VGA output and a 4-in-1 memory card reader slot. For video conferencing, there is an integrated HD 720p web camera.

Another essential feature is Intel’s Wireless Display technology that enables users to enjoy Full HD content on an external HDTV or HD monitor without the hassle of wires.

Other specs, pricing and availability

The X460 and X460DX will reportedly ship with a pre-installed copy of Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional 64-bit OS. These portable computers weigh approximately 1.98kg and have a thickness of less than one inch.  Additionally, the manufacturer claims that the 6-cell 65Wh battery should deliver about 8 hours of runtime.

MSI has supposedly teamed up with Creative to deliver the premium quality THX TruStudio Pro wrap around sound system. It has also included a dedicated S-Bar hotkey that lets you find the function you are looking for very quickly.

Pricing and availability details are yet to be released.
