Innovation, thy name is MSI. Integrating Tobii's eye-tracking system into one of MSI's iconic notebooks was a bold move that can potentially change the way you work and game. Delivering smooth, agile functionality, it largely pays off, mostly dodging the gimmick label. I say mostly because 29 games is a pretty small catalog, especially when only two of the titles are triple A.

MSI has outdone itself with this machine. The GT72 Dominator Pro Dragon Edition is a beautiful piece of technology any way you slice it, but beyond the attractive chassis lies a gaming force, waiting to be unleashed. For $3,099, you get a laptop that can play some of the most taxing games on the market with pretty, consistent frame rates.

What it takes to get a laptop to game like a desktop
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
Are there improvements to be made? Sure. As neat as it is to see 32GB in a laptop, I’d shave that in half for the savings because the vast majority of people just don’t need 32GB of RAM. While under a normal GPU load or even overclocked to 4GHz, the GT72S Dragon fan noise was reasonable—but on occasion, especially when coming out of standby, the fans would run at a loud full speed for a few seconds. And yeah, those trackpad buttons. I imagine the factory technician who calibrated them could lift a Buick with her thumbs if these felt normal to her.

Model: The MSI GT72S 6QF Dominator Pro G 29TH Anniversary Edition is a well built, gaming powerhouse that will satisfy most hardcore of gamers. Its design is sleek with the entire chassis finished in dark grey and highlighted with touches of red accents. The rear vents enable exceptional airflow and the lid of the laptop is moulded out of durable brushed aluminium. Display on the device is a 17.3 inch Full HD, wide-viewing angle IPS panel, which provides good color saturation and sharpness. One of the standout features of this display is the inclusion of G-SYNC ready technology allowing the panel to work perfectly with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 GPU that features 8 GB of GDDR5 VRAM.

The MSI GT72S 6QF Dominator Pro G 29TH Anniversary Edition comes with a 6th Gen. Intel Core i7 processor, up to gigantic 64 GB of DDR4 RAM and storage options ranging from HDD to M.2 SSDs with different capacities. The audio quality is superb due to the ESS SABRE HiFi audio DAC technology and speakers by Dynaudio. Other features found on the laptop are Bluetooth 4.1, a BD writer or a DVD Super Multi drive, a FHD webcam, a card reader, HDMI port, 6 USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 Type-C port and a mini-Display port. The 9 cell battery makes the laptop a good portable setup.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (Laptop): Overclockable laptop graphics card based on the desktop GTX 980. Performance depends on the cooling solution and power supply.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

6820HK: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.79 kg:

Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

82.63%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
