MSI’s Creator Z16 is one of a new cadre of “creator” laptops that have been popping up from companies that are traditionally gaming-oriented over the past two years. They tend to take the sorts of specs that you might see in a gaming laptop and cram them into a thinner chassis that looks more like something one might bring into a boardroom. While you could certainly use the Z16 for gaming — it has an RTX 3060 discrete GPU and a heavy-duty “Cooler Boost” cooling system — it also has a more subtle look than even the most subdued of MSI’s gaming laptops, with a silvery-gray finish, a barely visible dragon logo, and MacBook-esque rounded corners. There’s a 16:10 QHD+ screen with a 120Hz refresh rate (my much-preferred aspect ratio for productivity devices). It ships with Windows 10 Pro. And the video conferencing features — the speakers, in particular — are a solid upgrade from what I often expect to see on a gaming laptop. The system would make a fantastic multimedia machine.

If you were already planning on spending around ten grand for your next workstation laptop, the Dell XPS 15 is one of the more obvious options to look at. Prices will change based on how you configure it, but we managed to configure one with the same processor, a weaker NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD and a 15.6-inch, 3.5K OLED display—all for less than the MSI Creator Z16 at RM10,778.99. I mean yeah you’re giving up a bit in terms of graphics performance and refresh rate, but with a much better display panel that could be a more important factor for content creators. But sometimes not everyone has that much to drop on a laptop, even if it is for work and creating content. If you want a cheaper alternative to the MSI Creator Z16, then the Acer Swift X is perhaps more up your alley. There’s two models, but the one with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U, 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti is a mere RM4,999!

First of all, the battery. It won’t be a smart decision to do heavy-duty work away from the plug. Not only you won’t be able to get the maximum performance you need but your battery will drain extremely quickly. While on the note of computing power, we feel that content creators will be generally happy with the laptop. But from all devices we’ve tested with the Core i7-11800H, this was the worst in terms of performance.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
