Since the market for notebooks is getting smaller each day and day to day users are switching to some capable smartphones for their daily tasks, manufacturers are looking for ways to attract new users. This is of course my thinking, But some of the recent models from manufacturers like HP, Dell, even Apple with new iPad are targeting students or schools. Lenovo provides some ThinkPad models with special discounts to students and school. Following this trend, we have the Lenovo N23 Yoga now; a small convertible model with Chrome OS. T heN23 Yoga is a 11.6 netbook so to speak. It comes with a Mediatek 8173c processor, which means it is not a performance beast but a companion for lets say homeworks, internet surfing and maybe some multimedia joy? Its hardware is not something amazing: 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB eMMC flash drive, 1,366 x 768 resolution touchscreen. Yup, that’s it. Case, well it is plastic of course, nothing premium. What is the price? Only around 300$. If you can add a bit more, you might have the chance to get a decent laptop with a real processor. But the idea here is to have something more flexible. The N23 Yoga weighs around 1.4 kg and lasts for about 10 hours on a single charge. It is easy to carry around, since it is convertible, it can replace the need for carrying books around and with its touchscreen, you may forget carrying notebooks as well. Of course your taste of responsiveness for a touchscreen will matter. A pen is not included in the package, but it is easy to get from a store. Since it is rugged, the robustness is out of question. It has all the measures against fall, drops etc from about 75 cm. The device is also water resistant. So, yeah your device is safe. Connectivity wise, it comes with an HDMI out, a USB 3.0 port, USB-C for charging, an SD card reader, a Kensington lock and well that’s it. For video calls it is equipped with a 720p webcam, which is okay. Just like almost all convertibles, it comes with 4 modes. Tablet, laptop, stand and tent. Different tastes require different solutions, right? Now, again don't expect too much from the device as it only comes with a mobile SoC. Therefore I can only recommend it to maybe high or secondary school students while for college degree you need something that has the raw power to run, well, actual software. Long story short, even if you are not a student, buy this device if you are looking for a lightweight mobile companion that you can carry around, get easy tasks done, do some writing there and there, watch some videos and stay away from the power outlet. But if you can’t do without the horse power, better look at solutions with either AMD or Intel solutions on them. As in all my reviews, would I buy it? I would consider it for my child for sure after installing some parental control software of course. Would I buy it for myself? Definitely not. Hands-on article by Ümit Yılmaz Güneş

MT8173C: ARM-based quad-core SoC that integrates a performance cluster of two Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz (max.) and a power saving cluster with two Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz (max.).

Intel Celeron:

N3160: Frugal quad-core SoC based on the Atom architecture "Airmont" for inexpensive notebooks. Runs with clocke between 1.6-2.24 GHz and includes a graphics adapter with DirectX 11.2 support.
