After Intel's late-August Core 2 Duo launch, the first Lenovo laptop to incorporate the new processor wasn't a ThinkPad, but the humble Lenovo 3000 N100. With a starting price of $699 ($929 for the base Core 2 Duo model), the N100 line isn't exactly where you'd expect to find the latest and greatest components. Then again, there's nothing worse than seeing a well-designed laptop hobbled by subpar performance, and while the N100 we tested won't win any speed races, it zips through the typical productivity work that most budget laptop buyers are looking to do. Granted, if you need blazing performance, strong security measures, or a lengthy warranty, you should look beyond the N100 to more expensive laptops, such as the HP Compaq nc6400, the Dell Latitude D620, or Lenovo's own ThinkPad Z61t. This Core 2 Duo version of the Lenovo 3000 N100 combines decent performance with the features and connections a small-business user will need, all at a competitive price.

As vendors switch over to Intel's latest notebook processor, the Core 2 Duo, you can save a few bucks on older Core Duo-equipped notebooks such as the Lenovo 3000 N100. It's got a fairly long list of desirable features: A capacious hard drive, a nice screen, plenty of USB ports, and snappy performance. On the downside, I encountered woefully bad speakers, mediocre battery life, and a slightly stiff keyboard. Also, software costs extra, further lessening the system's appeal.

Lenovo include a lot of software as standard and its recovery suite is excellent for doing regular backups or restoring to factory defaults. Personally, I go straight to add/remove and get rid of most of it. The system tray is absolutely a chocker with icons and it's hard to find what's important. Although it's nice to Norton Internet Security included, I'd sooner be using AVG Anti-Virus. This notebook is a good performer in a decent chassis. Although £537.98 is for the version with integrated graphics and only 512MB of memory, this can't be far off and that's amazing value for money. Unless you are intending on being on the move a lot, this is well worth considering.

The Lenovo 3000 N100 is the latest addition to the company’s new line of Lenovo-branded notebooks. Unlike the nondescript C100 model, the N100 sports a stylish design and offers a nice 15.4-inch widescreen display. At 6.2 pounds, it’s relatively easy on the shoulders. The 1.5-inch-thick notebook’s Premium Silver finish is offset by a black wrist rest and keyboard layout. The full-sized ThinkPad-style keyboard is spacious and responsive, and the two-button touchpad maintains the same aspect ratio as the display. As with the C100, the N100 lacks a trackpoint mouse controller—an omission that is sure to disappoint loyal ThinkPad enthusiasts. The integrated speakers will fill the bill for basic sound output, but music audio quality is subpar.

Lenovo 3000 N100 - UK EXCLUSIVE!
Source: Bios Magazine English Archive.org version
The uninspiringly-named 3000 N100 is Lenovo’s first-branded dual-core laptop. The low-cost system also sports a widescreen display, FireWire, DL DVD burner, built-in camera and easy-to-use management software. The system is pitched at small business customers with a limited IT budget, and we believe it hits the spot very well. The only real disappoints are the lacklustre design and basic pointing devices. The N100 is a better system than the C100, offering good processing power, a nice set of features, and an attractive price tag. It’s no ThinkPad and a battery life of 2h 44m isn’t going to set the world on fire, but Lenovo’s first widescreen laptop will give some other big players (Dell, HP and Toshiba) a run for their money.

Lenovo N100 Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The N100 has lots to recommend about it. From my vantage point, it looks more like a consumer notebook with the glossy screen and plastic case. A dash of the business side has been thrown in with the fingerprint reader, DVD-RAM and more extensive software bundle. I think the $64,000 question for the N100 is going to be price. If Lenovo can keep the price down for N100, it should do well. If the price starts to go too high, like over $1500, it is going to be a harder to justify the N100. At that price point there are notebooks, even Lenovo's own Z60, which will have better construction and features for the same price. It will be interesting to see when the Z60 gets Core Duoized how it stacks against the N100.

Lenovo didn't make much of a splash with the 3000 C100, the first notebook to bear its name. But round two is looking a lot brighter. The sleek-looking Lenovo 3000 N100 will make a better impression on consumers, giving them good processing power, a nice set of features, and a price tag ($1,349 direct) even I can agree on. On the outside, the N100 looks a lot like the Lenovo ThinkPad Z60m. It has a silver lid that looks like the Z60m's titanium cover, but the shell is made entirely out of plastic. The N100 weighs 6.1 pounds, which isn't too heavy to tote around. The transflective 15.4-inch widescreen is excellent for images and well suited to multimedia tasks such as video and photo editing.

Lenovo, the company that bought IBM's ThinkPad business last year, has developed an alternative brand of desktop PCs and laptops designed to "address the needs of small-business customers" at a cheaper starting price point than most ThinkPad models. The first two laptop offerings under the Lenovo 3000 umbrella include the superbudget C100 (starting at $599) and the slightly higher-end N100 (starting at $799--same as the ThinkPad Z60t). Our well-equipped $1,399 N100 test unit delivered a strong combination of components (including Intel's new Core Duo processor), performance, and connectivity for the price. The battery life wasn't remarkable, however, and despite the N100's low price, its one-year warranty is inferior to the three-year warranty offered with a comparably priced Dell Latitude D510.

When we set out to round up a handful of laptops that cost less than $1,000, we knew we had to include Lenovo. The small-business-focused Lenovo 3000 line has long been one of the best deals going if you want to buy a laptop built on the latest Intel processors and platforms. Our 14.1-inch Lenovo 3000 N200 review unit, which cost just $948, lived up to our expectations when it passed most of the other $1,000 systems on our benchmarks. Its primary competition, performance-wise, came from a Sony VAIO CR120 built on many of the same components, which kept pace with the Lenovo on all but one of our tests. But the slickly designed Sony incorporates a number of media-friendly features destined to appeal to entertainment-minded home users.

Source: Comp Reviews English Archive.org version
Lenovo's 3000 N200 notebook doesn't look all that different from the previous N100 model. It has received a number of updates to its core but it still strives to be a solid all around budget notebook system. It is now powered by the newer Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 dual core mobile processors that give it a good amount of performance without using too much power. This matched with a full gigabyte of memory lets it run smoothly with its Windows XP Professional operating system. Storage is pretty much what one can expect from a low cost notebook. The 80GB hard drive is usable but not as large as more expensive notebooks. It should do fine if you don't need too much storage space for digital media files. The dual layer DVD burner allows it to playback or record CD and DVD media. A 4-in-1 media card reader also is there for use with flash media cards.

Lenovo’s 3000 Family notebooks encompass the Widescreen Ultraportable sector with the V Series, and the larger, entertainment-minded notebooks with the N Series. The N series is marketed with a bevy of features to allow both ease of entertainment and general usage for small business users. But how different is this than the multitude of fully-featured business models? Does Lenovo bring a competitor to this bursting market, or just a bystander? We’ll find out. Today, we check out the N200 paired with the 15.4” LCD displaying a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. The N200 also ships with a lighter 14.1” form factor, although we felt that most consumers looking for a business model with entertainment capabilities would opt for the larger monitor. The N200 is dressed in silver that contains subtle mineral reflections. The Lenovo insignia is in glossy silver on top of the monitor, facing away from you.

The six-cell battery powered the unit for just 2.5 hours in our tests before giving out, almost 50 minutes shorter than average for this class of notebook. If you stick close to the office, you might be happy with this laptop, especially if you can catch a good configuration on sale. Our unit, which came with Corel WordPerfect Office 12, cost $1499 (as of 9/12/07). Lenovo recently reduced the price on a lower-powered configuration, with a 1.8-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 chip and 1GB of RAM, to a base of $899.

The bad: Somewhat thick; small touch pad; lousy speakers; few dedicated multimedia controls; poor gaming performance. Lenovo N200 Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The N200 is a very competitive laptop in the upper middle price range. If you configure a Dell or Toshiba laptop with similar specs you will spend as much as $200 more than the N200 price ... and they still lack the Santa Rosa platform. The N200 also had nice touches like Vista ultimate and a single 2gb stick of DDR2 (quite expensive compared to two 1gb sticks) included at no additional cost. The only drawback to the N200 is its very basic look and feel compared to much more stylish computers on the market. That said, the Lenovo N200 is something to consider if you are one of the shoppers who are more interested in features and cost than looks.

Beginner. The Lenovo 3000 N200 should be a 15.4 inch notebook with good workmanship, belonging to the beginner category, which especially attracts price-conscious customers. It raises the level of the office category, by being equipped with a dual core processor, 160 GB hard disk, Bluetooth, fingerprint reader, and web cam and by being offered at a great price of below 600 Euro.

The Lenovo 3000 N200 is a heavyweight, and not very pretty, business-style laptop – but it has several qualities that give it the edge over its peers. First is the raw performance from its 1.83GHz dual-core processor, performing real-world tasks quicker than any other full-sized or mini laptop here. Then there's its best-in-class battery life, coupled with a useful 160GB of hard drive storage.

A good laptop from Lenovo, but lacks adequate performance and features compared to rivals. While the 3000 N500 offers quality and affordability, it's lacking in performance and features compared to other machines around this price. Ultimately, this makes it hard to recommend and, at this price, we'd suggest looking elsewhere.

While Lenovo's ThinkPad range is aimed at business users, its cheaper N-series is a better choice for small businesses and users on a budget. The 3000 N500 is a great example of this design philosophy. Overall, the Lenovo 3000 N500 is a fantastic all-rounder. Quality matches that of laptops costing twice as much and, despite the use of a budget Intel Pentium Dual-Core processor, performance also proved outstanding.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300: The NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 is part of the lower performance segment and the competitor card of the ATI X1300. Technically it is simply lower clocked GeForce Go 7300.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

Intel Core Solo: Single core version of the Core Duo and successor of the Intel Pentium M; Because of the 65nm reduced structure width also smaller current consumption than Pentium M (maximally 27 Watts); the performance is comparable with the equivalent clocked Pentium M (somewhat faster because of a few improvements).

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T7100: Entry level to mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.

T5800: Entry level dual core processor based on the Merom core without Virtualization support and a low maximum temperature.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.

2.7 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

2.8 kg:

75.02%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
