The next major Android update will be released in just a few months time. The most extensive leak to date provides a first look at Google's next-generation smartphone operating system, which apparently features a modernized look in many respects.

After details about the new design of Android 17 have already been leaked recently, Android Authority and 9to5Google have now obtained a series of screenshots from leaker @romashka that are supposed to show an early beta version of Android 17. Similar to the "Liquid Glass" design of Apple’s iOS 26, Google is expected to focus on transparency going forward.

This new design approach is clearly noticeable in the volume panel, for example. Instead of a solid background as before, the background is now slightly transparent, as elements behind it are blurred much more heavily than on Apple devices in order to improve readability. Google tints these transparent areas using the accent color that’s been selected by the user.

The small volume slider and the menu for powering off the smartphone will also get a transparent background. After Android 16 already introduced transparency in some areas, such as Quick Settings, Google appears to expand this visual style to more parts of its Android 17 operating system.

Google is further revising the screen recording tool. In Android 17, settings can be adjusted via a floating window, while the recording timer stays in the status bar. Touching an app icon for a few seconds allows users to lock that specific app on Android 17. Some app icons are also getting a redesign. Thus far, there aren’t many details regarding the new features of Android 17, but mobile gaming enthusiasts can probably look forward to a number of improvements.
