Leak reveals BYD’s ambitious plans: Air suspension and roof-mounted LiDAR for the Han EV
The current BYD Han electric sedan is losing ground rapidly in its home market. After exceeding 31,000 deliveries in a single month in 2022, it recorded just 2,997 sales in August 2026. Fierce competition and the loss of NEV subsidies have driven the decline, reportedly prompting BYD to take action. According to unconfirmed leaks and recent spy photos, the company plans to introduce the third-generation Han as an aggressively priced entry-level model in an effort to reverse its fortunes.
The rumored "Xiao Han" ("small Han") has drawn considerable attention online in China. According to insider reports, the new EV will sit well below the larger "Da Han," which starts at the equivalent of about $37,300. Chinese outlets suggest a price of around about $29,900, while some rumors put the starting price as low as $25,400. At that price, buyers would struggle to find more than a basic subcompact car from many Western brands. BYD, meanwhile, reportedly plans to offer a fully electric sedan around 16.4 feet long, with a fastback profile and flush door handles.
The rumored specifications are striking. Automotive observers examining the latest spy photos have spotted a LiDAR unit on the roof of the heavily camouflaged prototypes. They expect the car to use DiPilot 300, also known as God's Eye B, with 12 cameras, five radar units and 12 ultrasonic sensors. While competing brands often charge substantial sums for city navigation assistance (City NOA), BYD reportedly plans to make the system standard on its entry-level model. Persistent rumors also point to adaptive DiSus-C dampers, or even DiSus-A air suspension on the top trim.
According to the unconfirmed reports, BYD is planning both fully electric and plug-in hybrid versions. The EV variants could offer rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, more than 400 kW of power and a range of up to 444 miles under China's less demanding CLTC test cycle. Rumors also suggest a Flash Charging system based on an 800- or 900-volt architecture. The plug-in hybrids (DM-i) are said to be getting a substantial upgrade, with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and an electric-only range of 124 to 152 miles. The exact fuel tank capacity and the onboard charger's AC charging power remain unconfirmed. Reported combined fuel consumption of roughly 69 to 90 mpg, offers another indication of what BYD may be targeting.
