Leak: Tesla might add a regular horn to its butterfly steering wheel in the Model S and Model X
The electric car pioneer Tesla is no stranger when it comes to quite peculiar design choices, and the futuristic butterfly-shaped steering wheel of the Tesla Model S and Model X is certainly a perfect example for this. While the steering wheel has proven to be a bit unpractical at low speeds and in tight traffic situations, one essential safety-related function is also integrated in a quite controversial kind of way.
In current production models of the Tesla Model S and Model X, the horn has to be activated via a separate touch-sensitive button or by covering all buttons on the right side of the steering wheel with your hand. In hectic and dangerous situations, this may take a split-second longer than a regular horn would, which is why Tesla now appears to be responding to this potentially life-threatening issue by integrating a regular horn as it can be found in basically any other car.
According to an article by Electrek, a leaked picture which was posted on Reddit suggests that an upcoming iteration of the butterfly steering wheel in the Tesla Model S and Model X could feature a horn which is activated by pressing the entire middle section of the steering wheel. The image shows a sticker which has been placed on top of the steering wheel to make drivers of the prototype aware of this important adjustment. However, it remains unclear if and when this change will be applied to actual production units of the Tesla Model S and Model X.
