Intel’s ULV CPU offer has just been updated with a couple of Comet Lake-U models designed for budget ultrabooks and compact mini PCs. Even though Intel launched the Comet Lake series as part of the 10th gen Core family, it still uses the old 14 nm manufacturing process, so these new arrivals are marginally better than the Coffee Lake refreshes launched last year.
Both chips have a 15 W TDP rating and are most likely binned chips that come with disabled features due to failure to meet certain performance requirements. Furthermore, both integrate only 2 MB L3 cache and support a maximum of 64 GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at up to 2.4 GHz.
The faster model comes in the form of the Pentium Gold 6405U, which features 2 cores and 4 threads clocked at 2.4 GHz. Like all Celeron models, the 5205U CPU does not support hyperthreading, so it only comes with 2 cores and 2 threads clocked at 1.9 GHz. Due to the low TDP, neither of these models features higher boost clocks, plus they can only utilize 12 PCIe 2.0 lanes. They also integrate an UHD Graphics GPU with max dynamic frequencies set to 950 MHz.
The Pentium Gold 6405U is now retailing for US$161, while the Celeron 5205U has a US$107 MSRP.

I first stepped into the wondrous IT&C world when I was around seven years old. I was instantly fascinated by computerized graphics, whether they were from games or 3D applications like 3D Max. I'm also an avid reader of science fiction, an astrophysics aficionado, and a crypto geek. I started writing PC-related articles for Softpedia and a few blogs back in 2006. I joined the Notebookcheck team in the summer of 2017 and am currently a senior tech writer mostly covering processor, GPU, and laptop news.
