Honor is now aiming to offer much more performance with its new MagicBook 14, which combines the latest 45-watt Alder Lake H processor with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 2050 graphics card. Not to mention more key travel. Update: USB-C charging limitation confirmed by Honor.

The Honor MagicBook 14 (2022) performed well for the mainstream knowledge-worker tasks I threw at it during testing, the array of ports is quite strong, and battery life was good. If you're looking for a workhorse laptop for everyday usage, and can find it on sale, the MagicBook 14 is worth considering.

The MagicBook 14 will prove a good option for workers on the go who need strong performance and a lengthy battery life and are willing to forego some luxuries to get them in a relatively affordable package. If you want a laptop that can turn heads then this isn’t it, but with a good port selection and plenty of power (in both senses) this is an eminently practical option, with plenty to recommend it.

The laptop’s price of around $549 reveals its mid-range nature, and while it has its fair share of limitations in terms of performance, I found the MagicBook 14 to be a versatile laptop, and it will be very ideal for students or on-the-go workers who need a relatively affordable computing machine with great battery life, good performance, attractive design, and solid build quality. One could argue that this isn’t a device tailored to provide experiences that users would get with devices from Razer or ASUS’ ROG line – but at the end of the day, it’s a capable machine nevertheless, and users determined to purchase the MagicBook should keep its limitations in mind.

Of course, I would, as long as productivity is your foremost intention for buying the device. If you want a laptop you can play some intensive games on as well, this isn't it. However, if you work from home, or you want a notebook you can easily take on the go with you, then the MagicBook 14 is it. It'll handle most work-related tasks with ease. It has a nice screen. The 2022 version of the 14 is pretty rapid in terms of processing, and you can watch movies and listen to music on it too, making it a fantastic all-rounder. If you've got the 2020 version and it is time for an upgrade, then you'll get that with this nifty little 'puter.

The Honor MagicBook 14 (2022) looks to be a fantastic productivity laptop that not only excels at day-to-day workloads, but can even blitz through entry-level content creation too. It’s an excellent alternative to the MacBook Air for those who want to stick with Windows. It’s a shame that the design is a little bland, while also being noticeably chunkier and heavier than the vast majority of laptops at this price. And while the screen is perfectly fine, it pales in comparison to the OLED models that are only a few hundred quid more expensive. This is a great productivity laptop that should serve you well in your studies or office work, but it simply doesn’t offer any of the flashy features or styling to make it a more tempting option than a MacBook Air or Dell XPS 13 Plus.

The Honor MagicBook 14 2022 is a huge step forward for the Chinese brand but there are some outstanding issues like the lack of Thunderbolt and Wi-Fi 6E, the absence of a card reader, the odd choice of a 4-year old GPU and perhaps most damaging of all, Honor’s decision to bypass the massive US market for the third year running.

So, is this thing worth it? You’ll have to part with €1,099 to get the base model. The variant with the RTX 2050 GPU will cost you €1,299. If you’re planning to use this laptop for video editing, gaming, or some serious work in photoshop, we’d suggest you go for the variant with a dedicated graphics card. Everything else can be handled by this laptop, and considering that alternatives are usually more expensive, this is not a bad deal at all. The display is good as long as you’re not planning to use it outdoors, the camera is decent, the performance is good, and the battery life is excellent. The speakers are also not bad, despite their location, and the fingerprint scanner does the job too. You have all the ports you need, and so on. If you’re in the market for a 14-inch laptop, which is also quite powerful, this is not a bad buy.

Honor:
In 2014 Huawei created the sub brand Honor and offers certain smartphone series under this name. Occasionally the products are also called Huawei Honor.
The market share of Honor products is manageable, but there are several reviews on Honor smartphones with average ratings (as of 2016).
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 Mobile: Mid range laptop graphics card based on the Turing architecture with raytracing features and 2,048 shaders (more than a RTX 2060) but only a small 64 Bit memory bus.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Intel Iris Xe G7 80EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G7 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 80 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.

Intel Alder Lake-P:
i5-12500H: Alder Lake based mobile CPU with 4 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. The performance cores offer hyper threading, leading to 16 threads that can be processed. The CPU clocks from 1.8 to 4.5 GHz and supports vPro.
Intel Raptor Lake-H:
i5-13500H: On Alder-Lake based mobile CPU with 4 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. The performance cores offer hyper threading, leading to 16 threads that can be processed. The CPU clocks up to 4.7 GHz and supports vPro.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
No weight comment found (one expected)!
80.81%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
