Harry Potter series: HBO casting for nearly forgotten book character fuels hopes for a faithful adaptation

After recent media reports about the recasting of the youngest Weasley child, things had gone a little quiet around HBO’s Harry Potter series. Now, a casting call for Season 2 is generating fresh buzz. According to Deadline, HBO is looking for a young actor to play Colin Creevey.
Fans who have only seen the movies may barely remember him: the Muggle-born Gryffindor student is best known for his camera and his almost boundless admiration for Harry Potter. In the films, he only appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where he is one of the people petrified by the Basilisk. In the books, however, he appears repeatedly across several volumes.
On Reddit, users are reacting almost matter-of-factly to the casting call and joking that it became a bigger news item at all. “Well I'd be a bit concerned if they weren't casting him for S2,” reads the top comment in the thread. At the same time, there is also a note of hope in the discussion. Redditors point out that Colin is one of the more prominent supporting characters, later even joins Dumbledore’s Army and plays a role in the Battle of Hogwarts.
That is why some see the casting as a small but positive sign of a more book-faithful adaptation. Fans will not have to wait too much longer for clarity on the direction of the series: Season 1 is set to premiere on December 25, 2026. The second season is expected in 2027 at the earliest, but more likely not until 2028.
