Reviews for the HP Pavilion tx1000

HP Pavilion tx1000
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
On WorldBench 6 Beta 2, the tx1000, equipped with a 2-GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 processor and Windows Vista Premium Home Edition, managed a middling real-word speed score of 64. In our battery tests, it ran down after just 1 hour, 45 minutes. Still, it's nicely designed and comfortable to use, despite the screen glare. Just be sure to pack the AC adaptor.

The HP Pavilion tx1000 is a stylish, solid-performing, multimedia laptop with a competitive price tag. It packs a lot of capabilities and features into a small 5 lb. package. The design is top-notch, and all of the included features add up to a very useful all-in-one machine. The average battery life, disappointing tablet functionality, and occasional washed-out coloring from the display keep the tx1000 from earning top honors in the ultraportable notebook category. In summary, it has a lot of plus points that make it an attractive notebook worthy of consideration if you are in the market for an ultraportable tablet machine.

Easy-to-use tablet PC has thoughtful design touches but short battery life

The tablet produced unimpressive results in our performance tests. On a beta version of WorldBench 6, the tx1000, equipped with a 2-GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 processor and Windows Vista Premium Home Edition, managed a score of 74, a middling mark. It ran down quickly on our battery tests, too, lasting just one hour and 47 minutes. (Because our benchmark is still in beta, we can't assign the notebook a PCW rating.) Nevertheless, it's nicely designed and comfortable to use, despite the screen glare. Just be sure to pack the AC adapter.

Tablet PCs have been around for a while. While looking like a notebook computer by design, their differentiating factor is the ability to write directly on its screen with a stylus and have your scrawl converted into editable text. However, apart from a small minority of loyal followers, tablets PCs have mostly been used in professional sectors such as hospitals and construction.

HP tx1000 Convertible Notebook Review
Source: Tablet PC Review English Archive.org version
HP should be commended for bringing something different to the table in terms of a multimedia notebook convertible. You certainly won't find any cool options like this from Dell. While the Tablet PC functionality of the tx1000 isn't outstanding, it can be useful and it's a nice bonus for a notebook that's strong even if you were to take away the touchscreen feature. Just being able to rotate the screen for presenting and viewing movies has its benefits. The looks of this machine are great and it's easy to carry around. The processor isn't the best out there and a magnesium built warrior this notebook is not, but overall the tx1000 is a winner that's really going to appeal to students and other mainstream users.

HP tx1000 Convertible Notebook First Impressions
Source: Tablet PC Review English Archive.org version
This is a first impressions look at the recently announced HP tx1000 convertible notebook. We have only had this unit for a few hours, but so far it seems good for the projected price. If you are in the market for an affordable, entertainment Tablet then the tx1000 may be what you are looking for, but you will have to wait until February 28.

This tablet and ultraportable combo has all the makings of a big success, but its simple touch screen, instead of a Wacom-enabled one, doesn't quite measure up to the competition. Pros: Sleek imprinting design. Integrated optical drive. Boatload of features. Integrated EV-DO. Great touchpad. Mini remote included. First tablet to announce with Vista Home Premium. Cons: Does not use a Wacom-enabled screen. Spotty pen-stroke recognition. No FireWire port.

The good: Innovative design; unique touchpad; touch screen doesn't require stylus; not expensive. The bad: Slightly thicker than it should be; glossy screen can be hard to read. The bottom line: HP's first Vista-based laptop, the Pavilion tx1000us, is an unusual but largely successful hybrid, combining a tablet design with an entertainment-focused laptop.

HP makes a credible case for Vista as highly usable even in an ultralight format. The HP Pavilion tx1000 (available for purchase February 28) crams a full suite of multimedia features and even limited Tablet capabilities into an attractive 4.2-pound notebook, complete with an optical drive. It's not the fastest ultraportable on the block, but you get a lot for your money. Borrowing from the look and feel of HP's Pavilion dv series, the black-and-silver tx1000 is certainly a striking ultraportable.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150: Integrated graphic card (shared memory) for AMD based laptops (nForce Go 430 MCP). The performance is slightly better than GMA 950.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.

TL-56:

In 90nm (33W TDP) and 65nm (31W TDP) produced dual core processor with a clock rate of 1.8 GHz. The TL-56 is still based on the K8 core and compareable to a slower clocked Core Duo.

12.10":

This range of display format is largely the upper limit for tablets and the lower limit for subnotebooks.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small in size and therefore easily portable. The tiny display has the added advantage of requiring little power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is exhausting for the eyes. High resolutions, which one is used to from a standard laptop, are almost not usable.

The same applies to tablets in this size range.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

72.75%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
