It appears the break-up between Google and Qualcomm in regard to smartphone SoCs has been a bitter one, judging by a recent tweet coming from the official @Snapdragon Twitter account. The post, which is embedded below, sardonically comments “We’ve decided to make our own smartphone SoC instead of using Snapdragon” followed by no fewer than 21 red flags. While no company or product is specifically mentioned, it’s obviously aimed at Google and the Tensor SoC.
Whether the post was made tongue-in-cheek or not seems irrelevant now as it has clearly backfired for the most part. When tech luminaries such as Marques Brownlee are suggesting “it’s not too late to delete this”, it would probably be a wise choice to pay heed. But Qualcomm has stuck to its guns and the salty tweet still remains visible for all to see. It seems that Google has ruffled some feathers by seeking help from Samsung and its Exynos line for the Pixel 6’s Tensor processor.
Unsurprisingly, many comments have picked out two issues that Qualcomm should be focusing upon rather than trying to troll Google. The first one is the lack of support for Snapdragon processors that are more than a couple of years old, and the second is the inherent problems that came with the flagship Snapdragon 888 such as overheating and battery performance issues. Benchmark leaks for Google Tensor (in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro) have looked quite promising, with the custom chip closing in on future rivals such as the SD888 and Exynos 2100.
