The Google Pixel Watch 4 looks uncannily similar to the Pixel Watch 3 at first glance, but Google has completely redesigned the housing, ranging from the curved OLED panel to a metal case that is easier to open. While the smartwatch won't ship until October 9, Wired has already taken it apart.
All that is required is to loosen two T2 screws hidden under the watch band pocket. The back can then be removed from the case, giving users access to many components, such as the sensors, the vibration motor and the battery. To replace the battery, simply remove the vibration motor before loosening two more T2 screws that hold the battery in place.
Once the battery has been removed, the display can be dismantled by disconnecting the corresponding cable from the motherboard and removing four screws. According to Wired, the screen was removed in just 13 minutes during the teardown, so even users with little repair experience should be able to replace the Pixel Watch 4's display relatively easily.
A silicone ring around the display is designed to keep the smartwatch waterproof even after a display replacement, albeit "only" to the IP68 standard, which means the watch can no longer be worn for swimming. As the teardown shows, the Pixel Watch 4 is much easier to repair than the Apple Watch, and even a little easier than the "repairable" Galaxy Watch Ultra.
