Google Nexus 8 to be manufactured by HTC
Rumors concerning the upcoming Nexus 8 tablet named Asus as the manufacturer of Google's 8-inch Android slate, but now it looks like things have changed and that company will be HTC. The Google-Asus partnership worked well in the past and the resulting slates were critically acclaimed, but sales numbers of the second generation Nexus 7 released last year were not good enough, it seems.
According to a recent report by DigiTimes which quotes sources from the upstream supply chain, the new Nexus 8 tablet will be released in the third quarter and Google will team up with HTC, who refused to work on the first generation Nexus 7 due to its involvement in the smartphone business. Now HTC seems to have the resources required to help Google push the Nexus 8 into a very competitive market.
On the other hand, the sources mentioned the fact "that Google is also not very aggressive about its third-generation Nexus tablet since the series has already served the purpose of boosting Android's penetration in the tablet market." Remains to be seen if those who claim that the upcoming Nexus 8 could be Google's last tablet are right or not.
