The 14-inch (1366 x 768 pixels) wide-screen laptop manages to stay under five pounds while keeping battery life at 2 ¾ hours long and screen brightness exceptionally high. If your academic achiever is looking for a slightly smaller machine than the usual 15-incher but still wants a machine that performs well and feels plenty spacious Gateway's ID series is full of win.

"Low-cost" and "eye-catching" don't often go hand in hand, so it's with some surprise that we found the Gateway ID49C07u in our back-to-school retail roundup, satisfying both aspects amply. As a thin, affordable Core i3 laptop, the Gateway ID49C07u excels as an attractively priced back-to-school buy; however, its ergonomics and thin feature set might turn others off.

If you tried to guess how much the 14-inch Gateway ID49C07u costs, you’d probably start by evaluating its specifications, tallying up its features, and appraising the quality of its design.
With some of the best performance we’ve seen from a 14-inch laptop that sells for less than $700, the ID49C07u is a capable budget laptop that offers a lot of value.

Consumers looking for an inexpensive notebook that still has a sense of style should check out the Gateway ID49C07u. Not only is its metallic lid classy, but the notebook has decent performance figures to back it up. While we wish battery life was a bit longer--and the boot time shorter--these faults are forgiveable in a system that costs less than $700. Ultimately, the ID's glowing touchpad seems a little gimmicky, but we like that Gateway tried something new on a system that isn't for the uber-rich.

To say the Gateway ID49C is a mixed bag would be a gross understatement: the notebook feels downright schizophrenic. On the one hand, Gateway has clearly tried to produce a classier, more upscale model, and in some ways they've succeeded. Aluminum styling is always attractive, and opting to use as little glossy plastic as humanly possible is welcome in a world where major companies like Toshiba and Dell still aren't fully grasping that "less is more." Which is to say: less glossy plastic is more attractive.

Thin, stylish, and a change from the company's previous designs, the silvery Gateway ID49C series has a slim form factor paired with an optical drive and Core i3/i5 processors. The Gateway ID49C08 combines speedy Core i5 performance and automatic-switching Nvidia graphics in a small package at a reasonable price, but several small annoyances take away from the experience.

It may be $170 more expensive than the base model, but the Gateway ID49C08u packs a lot in. You get three times the graphics performance (which means the ability to game as well as edit video), longer battery life, and the same eye-catching design. It's also $130 less expensive than the Toshiba Satellite M645, which is less powerful and lasts an hour less on a charge. While the glowing touchpad takes some getting used to, the ID49C08u is one of the best bang-for-your-buck 14-inch laptops around.

When we looked at the $679.99 Gateway ID49C07u earlier this month, we were impressed by its ability to combine impressive specs, a smart-looking design, and speedy performance into an inexpensive 14-inch laptop. A combination of best-in-class application and 3D-graphics performance makes the ID49C08u one of the best thin-and-lights you’ll find for under $1,000.

Measuring 13.46 x 9.64 x 0.87/0.99 inches and weighing just a little over 5 pounds, the Gateway ID49C13u is absolutely portable for road warriors yet makes few compromises in terms of CPU and graphics power. It’s certainly a heavy hitter in the multimedia department with good movie and music playback and streaming performance, an outstanding screen and good built-in audio. With the NVIDIA GT 330M the Gateway can handle most gaming smoothly. The system has ample ports including an HDMI port, and runs quite cool. So if you have $850 to spend on a work or school computer that can double as your weekend entertainment system, the Gateway ID49C13u is a good bet that also has a modern look. What you won’t get for the price are Blu-ray Disc and fingerprint scanner.

Gateway has built a reputation on affordable machines with solid specifications, but the company’s new ID49C aims a little higher than the mainstream. With a lick of aluminum and an eye-catching backlit glass trackpad, there’s more to the ID49 than just its Core i5 processor. Has Gateway done enough to lift the ID49 above its 14-inch competition? Gateway's ID49C13u laptop offers some very good performance and features at a reasonable price but the keyboard and trackpad design mare what would otherwise be a solid 14-inch laptop. The slim profile will be welcome for those traveling with a laptop frequently as does the NVIDIA Optimus technology to help with the battery life. The backlit trackpad and keyboard are just too annoying and difficult to use.

After all is said and done, I am at a bit of an impasse with the Gateway ID49C13u. The sad track pad really ruins this machine for me. I could use the notebook with an external mouse, but for a trackpad to have so many issues is not a good thing considering how much use it will get with most users. I can only hope that the track pad issues I have found on this machine aren't common across the entire line. Sadly, the fact that the Gateway ID49C13u is in perfect physical condition leads me to expect the same issues across the line. Other than the poor track pad and the flexing keyboard, the Gateway ID49C13u offers impressive performance considering its under $850 price tag.
If the track pad worked better this machine would be a no brainier for a budget shopper, but as it is, I would not want to use this notebook without a mouse.

Budget shoppers are used to sacrificing style to get the necessities. This is true if you’re shopping for clothes, a car, or a laptop. One of the thinnest and lightest 14-inch laptops around, the ID47H02u boasts a sleek part-aluminum design, speed, and a long-running battery. It's an excellent deal for mobile users on the go.

Differentiating a mainstream laptop from the rest of the crop is no easy task, but the Gateway ID47H02u found a cubbyhole. It squeezed a 14-inch screen into a 13-inch frame by using very little bezel, which its rivals have yet to attempt. It's also a well-designed laptop and is both powerful and battery efficient. It's not the best deal in this class, though. That distinction belongs to the Asus U46E-BAL5—our Editor's.

The Gateway ID47H02u is a slim-bodied, full-featured 14-inch laptop that offers a surprisingly strong mix of performance and design at a price that hovers between budget and mainstream. The Gateway ID47H02u is a strong choice for students, families, and anyone else who needs a highly portable notebook with a dash of style. The Dolby-powered speakers also help this 14-inch machine stand out. However, we're not big fans of the glossy touchpad. We prefer the HP dm4t, which has a better touchpad and similar battery life for $100 less. But if you want Core i5 power, long endurance, and a sleek design at a reasonable price, this Gateway laptop is worth the investment.

Gateway: Gateway, Incorporated. is a computer hardware company based in California which develops, manufactures, supports, and markets a wide range of personal computers, computer monitors, servers, and computer accessories. AOL acquired Gateway.net, the online component of Gateway Inc., in 1999. 2007, Acer completed its acquisition of Gateway for approximately US$710 million. The market share outside of the US market is rather low.
In 2014 to 2016, Gateway did no longer belong to the Top 10 laptop manufacturers/distributors. Newer devices from Gateway are hardly reviewed by specialist media any longer (as of 2016).
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is the successor of the GT 230M and technically just a slightly higher clocked GT 240M (but it should still maintain the power envelope of the GT 230M as the naming suggests).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i3:
350M:
The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i5:
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
AMD Phenom II X3:
P820: Mobile 3-core CPU based on the desktop Athlon II X3. Due to the missing level 3 cache and the slow clock speed not really well suited for gamers.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
No weight comment found (one expected)!
78.05%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
