The Garmin eTrex Solar handheld GPS is on sale at Amazon with one of the largest discounts ever, a $50 savings off the MSRP of $249.99 for a final price of $199.99. The handheld has only dipped lower to $189.99 during the store's Christmas 2024 sale.
The Garmin eTrex Solar ditches the color screen of their Edge Solar series in exchange for a black and white screen for longer runtimes. This allows spring breakers and outdoor enthusiasts to travel deep into the wilderness without fear of getting lost. Without recharging, the device can run approximately 8 days when set to fast GPS updates or 75 days on slow.
The built-in solar charging panel enables the eTrex Solar to run indefinitely, so hikers tackling the 2,190+ mile, six month Appalachian Trail can complete their journeys. Charging occurs when daylight is brighter than 75,000 lux, which is typically 4+ hours each day. Rainy days and temporary water immersion won't harm the GPS due to its IPX7 rating.
Before starting their trips, owners of the eTrex can add weather updates, plan and map out trips, and add geocache points when the unit is connected to their smartphones. All navigation points are clearly visible on the unit's 2.2-inch monochromatic display. The unit can receive multi-band GPS signals for the best coverage and accuracy while a digital compass enables easy navigation when using paper maps or landmarks.
